2026 is a defining year for the UK fibre market. After more than a decade of accelerated deployment, full-fibre infrastructure is now a familiar part of the national landscape rather than an emerging ambition. 83% of UK premises have access to full fibre, while gigabit-capable broadband is available to 90%. From a rollout perspective, the transformation has been remarkable.

Romanian multinational telecommunications and mobile operator company Digi Communications N.V. has entered the United Kingdom’s fibre optic broadband market by acquiring 51% of the share capital of alternative network provider WhyFibre, which was conducted via Digi’s subsidiary Fiber One Limited. A pilot of their new FTTP network is now in the works.

Customers of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (O2) fixed broadband packages have today been told that the internet, TV and phone provider is now rolling out their new Smart Support diagnostics service – a 24/7 broadband speed and connection monitoring solution – to all of its customers “as standard and at no extra cost“. Initially only 330,000 customers had been able to benefit from it.

The former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of alternative UK broadband operator Freedom Fibre, Shawn Nolan, was recently awarded £105,500 in compensation by an Employment Tribunal after he raised concerns that the company’s engineers were frequently carrying out fibre optic work on private land without consent.

Alternative network operator and ISP Fibrus has today revealed that they’ve surpassed the £1 million mark in terms of how much investment they’ve put toward community projects across Northern Ireland and Cumbria (England). This usually occurs in the locations where they’ve been rolling out their new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has today released their March 2026 update on the delivery progress of contracts that have been awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The update reveals that some 227,310 contracted premises (up from 215,380 in Feb 2026) have so far been covered out of a planned total of 1,020,160.

City-focused full fibre (FTTP/B) broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which claims to have deployed their gigabit speed network to cover 1.9 million UK homes (mostly across blocks of flats / MDUs), has today finally removed their legacy entry-level 33Mbps package for new customers (existing subscribers will continue to be supported).

London-based ISP The One Broadband (‘The One‘) has acquired the CityFibre linked customer base of retail internet provider Octaplus, which has spent the past few years selling broadband packages to consumers via a number of alternative full fibre networks. But customers on the provider’s other networks “will not be affected“.

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff has today expanded their range of monthly rolling fixed full fibre (FTTP) broadband plans by introducing the option of a cheaper 24-month minimum contract term. The move makes the monthly pricing on each of their packages between £3 and £4 cheaper. Existing members will also get 3 months of service for free.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published the outcome of their major Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which largely tweaks their existing approach to market regulation in order to help promote competition and investment in gigabit broadband (1000Mbps+) and business connectivity. But not everybody is going to be happy.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and London Councils have today published a new London Infrastructure Framework (LIF), which seeks to establish a shared long-term vision for London’s critical economic infrastructure priorities through to 2050. This includes, among other things, tackling the 390,000 premises across the city that are still “unserved” by gigabit broadband.

The FTTH Council Europe and IDATE have today previewed their 2026 ranking of the 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and coverage of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks. The data sees the UK pass 24.2 million homes (up by 2.79m in the year) with take-up of 48% (up from 37.1%). But coverage growth has slowed.

Broadband, phone and mobile operator Sure, which in October 2025 rebranded to ‘Sure by Beyon’ to align with the global reach of the Beyon Group, has warned customers on the English Channel Island of Guernsey that the “time is now to switch to fibre” as it won’t be long before the legacy copper line telecoms network is completely switched off.

Broadband ISP FibreNest, which will soon serve full fibre (FTTP) packages to owners of new build homes covered by either OFNL or Persimmon Homes (FibreNest was acquired by OFNL in 2025), has notified existing customers of a Price Freeze until 2027 and hinted that customers will soon gain the ability to switch to other fibre providers.

Nearly a year will have soon passed since alternative broadband operator All Points Fibre Networks (APFN), which is backed by Fern Trading, announced that they’d completed the consolidation of their three own-built full fibre networks (here) – Giganet, Jurassic Fibre and Swish Fibre. But bizarrely it’s still not possible for new customers to sign-up in areas where the network is present.

Broadband provider TalkTalk has notified those looking to join its service that they still have a few more days to sign-up and “lock in their monthly bill until next year“. This is because the ISP, not unlike other major providers, currently “guarantee no price rises until 2027 – when customers sign up before 30th March 2026“.

National network operator Openreach (BT) has published a new March 2026 update on their roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP technology. The update reflects all the recent changes and progress with their existing locations (doesn’t add new areas) and has also tweaked their info. to give people “clearer information about when to expect full fibre build to start“.
