Please find below a brief history of the ISPreview.co.uk website. In addition, a detailed list of site contacts for readers and members of the media can be found on our Contacts Page.
Easter 1999, Screaming.net, the first unmetered dialup ISP launched to a colossal reception in the UK. Thousands joined up and by early June problems quickly became obvious. It was at this time that a small team of technologists and web developers decided people would need a forum for their news and problems.

ISPreview.co.uk (ISPr) was finally founded on the 1st June 1999 by Mark Jackson, a trained IT consultant and computer engineer based in Poole (Dorset), as a spare-time project. Soon after the site was put on hold, while we secured a new webhost and developed more interactive features and content. The site finally went 100% public with the new web host and content on 9th November 1999.

Since then the market for consumer Internet connectivity has been revolutionised by faster broadband technologies (e.g. ADSL) and is currently experiencing another significant change with the move to so-called "superfast" broadband, such as hybrid-fibre (FTTC, Cable, FTTN) and full fibre optic (FTTH/P/B) connectivity.

Today ISPreview remains one of the United Kingdoms biggest locations for Internet Service Provider related news, reviews, articles, discussion, information and ISP comparisons. Recognised by numerous TV, newspapers, websites and magazines alike, the site has seen unprecedented growth since the first few people visited all those years ago.

Built on compatibility, interactivity and the ability to listen, ISPr continues to expand with the aid of its readers whom help to shape it. During this time the website has gone through a lot of changes and is currently on its fourth generation design (earlier versions can be viewed as illustrations at the right side of this page).

Going forward ISPr intends to expand by offering more interactivity and integration to our readers, which should make it easier for consumers to have their thoughts and feelings heard.

Today ISPreview.co.uk remains a fully independent website, which is still personally owned and run by Mark Jackson with the support of several friends and volunteers (see contact page). Our goal remains to produce the most impartial content possible, based around an independent and pragmatic consumer perspective of today's market.
What Makes ISPreview Different

1. We're independent.

ISPreview is personally and privately owned by its founder Mark Jackson. No big marketing firms (some of which often have links to the big ISPs) or price comparison groups are involved in our ownership in any way.

2. We're free.

Most price comparison sites tend to only list providers that agree to pay them a commission for sales, but we list providers for free. The difference is clear, you'll find around 200 providers on our site and only 6-10 on commercial sites. The caveat is that we don't have the resources to list every single package for each ISP and so adopt a benchmark approach.

3. We're pragmatic.

Similar sites tend to either firmly tow the industry line in their coverage or tow the pro-consumer line. At ISPreview we are pro-consumer, but we also believe in being as balanced as possible in order to fairly reflect the industry viewpoint and thus give the best context (i.e. we don't only tell one side what they want to hear).

4. We love what we do.

In many ways ISPreview is a passion project and has been since the very beginning. We cover this industry and bring you all of the daily news because we genuinely enjoy doing it, not because it's just a day job. This site means a lot more to those involved than that.

5. We don't over-advertise.

On a lot of news and information sites today it's not uncommon to find your eyes being blasted with advertising front, left, right and centre. Unfortunately adverts (banners etc.) are essential to help cover costs but we do make a concerted effort to show as few of them as possible. As such you will generally run into fewer ads on ISPreview than almost all other news sites, which means there's less reason for our readers to use an ad-blocker.
