The latest Q3 2024 results from Virgin Media (O2) have been published, which shows that they’re home to 5,726,900 fixed broadband customers (up by 16.2k in Q3 vs -12.2k in Q2) and expanded their full fibre (FTTP) network to 281,100 premises – primarily via nexfibre (down from 295k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a minority 8.3% stake in Cornerstone (worth £186m).

The tediously named telecoms procurement specialist, Altnets (the company, not the sector), has launched a new system that attempts to address some of the complex engineering and compliance challenges that UK broadband ISPs face when installing in large residential buildings (MDUs / blocks of flats etc.), while also making those deployments more efficient.

Mobile network operator Vodafone has today announced that they’ve teamed-up with wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave to provide “improved high-speed” 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity at Haven’s many holiday parks across Yorkshire, Norfolk and Kent in England, as well as Scotland, North Wales and various coastal communities.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has clarified to ISPreview that their Pay As You Go (PAYG) SIM plans still do NOT currently support their latest 5G (mobile broadband) network, which is despite the main product page for those plans being changed to state that customers will be able to “enjoy super-fast 4G and 5G with our Pay As You Go SIM cards.”

UK ISP BT has published the final biannual progress update for 2024 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The ISP has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,248 premises (up from 7,954 in April 2024), with 215 further builds in-progress (down from 265).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) and UK tech charity Jangala have this morning announced that, over the past year, they’ve provided more than 1,000 internet-enabling “Get Boxes” to charities and local authorities across the country, which are providing free WiFi hotspots to help thousands of people affected by “data poverty” to get online.

Managed internet service provider ASK4, which delivers gigabit-capable broadband to students and residents (renters) in multi-tenant buildings across the UK (as well as other parts of Europe), has signed a new strategic partnership with network kit manufacturer TP-Link to deliver “enhanced connectivity” across hundreds of thousands of their users in related buildings.

Alternative network operator and ISP Grain (Grain Connect), which has already built their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 220,000 UK premises RFS and 30,000 customers (21st May 2024), recently published their annual results and made some positive financial predictions. A further £18m of equity funding was also secured.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced the next batch of 16 new UK locations (towns and cities) where their new 5G Standalone (SA) network will be deployed “before the end of the year“, which will bring various benefits such as faster speeds, network prioritisation and other features to customers.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve started to deploy their 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the Berkshire (England) town of Wokingham, although it’s unclear exactly how many premises will benefit, but it is “expected to reach the majority” of local premises.

Rural UK broadband ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is a community benefit society that has deployed their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network to 25,000 premises across England (inc. 13,000+ customers), has secured new grant funding to help them reach more villages in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley area.

Alternative broadband operator Spring Fibre, which seems to have been in the early stages of rolling out a new 10Gbps capable wholesale full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network since 2021 – starting in Lincolnshire (here), has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve taken the “difficult decision” to file a Notice of Intention (NoI) to appoint an administrator.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has increased the bundled 4G data allowance (mobile broadband) on their £8 per month SIM Only Basics plan from 30GB (GigaBytes) to 40GB. The operator’s Basics plans also come with unlimited UK minutes and texts on 12-month term.

The new, if still imperfect, One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which is Ofcom’s solution for making it quicker and easier for consumers to switch between broadband ISPs and phone providers, is now fully in control after the old backstop (NoT+) system was decommissioned today. But some issues remain with customer matching and ISP support.

Consumer broadband ISP, phone, mobile and TV provider EE (BT) has today claimed that this week’s release of “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” on PC and consoles has “driven the biggest ever amount of gaming traffic for a game launch” on their network, with the largest spike actually hitting on Monday (21st) due to the start of the preload period.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they will be taking on the responsibility for day-to-day regulation of Premium Rate Services (PRS) – effectively transferring them from the Phone-Paid Services Authority (PSA) – on 1st February 2025.
