The Kent County Council (KCC) in England has complained to the UK government about a “lack of progress” being made on the region’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for rural communities. The £112m (state aid) contract for this was awarded to CityFibre in early 2024 (here), which committed to extend full fibre to 50,000+ hard-to-reach premises.

The Horsham-based Telecom Acquisitions Group (TAL), which is a holding company for a number of familiar residential-focused internet service provider brands (Home Telecom, Eclipse Broadband etc.), has acquired both the brand and customer base of another troubled ISP in the shape of Earth Broadband.

Some customers of mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media), specifically those on certain 30 day rolling SIM Only contracts, have informed ISPreview of how they’ve just been notified that they will be hit by a sharp price hike from 1st October 2025 (in many cases this equates to an increase of c.12%).

The Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has published a new briefing that warns how Social Tariffs from UK broadband and mobile providers, which offer significant cost savings to those on state benefits (e.g. Pension Credit, Universal Credit etc.), continue to suffer from three “critical flaws” – minimal awareness, inconsistent quality and affordability.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband networks, has today posted somewhat of a belated welcome to the new Digital and Technologies Sector Plan. But they also warn that “further clarity is needed” on how the Government will support competition as FTTP rollouts slow and consolidation pressures grow.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has indicated, via a new briefing, that they are “making a limited volume” of Saturday provision (installation) appointments available for Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband line deployments. Retail ISPs will be able to select these if they so desire, at least for a limited time.

The Government has modified the Single Supplier Framework agreement that they awarded to Openreach (BT) last year under their Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme (here). The deal was originally valued at “up to” £800m and designed to help upgrade 312,000 premises in some of the hardest to reach UK areas to FTTP. But this has just been boosted in value to £1.2bn.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) has proposed to update their Telecommunications Security Code of Practice (2022). This sets out what sort of specific security measures public telecoms providers (broadband, mobile etc.) must take in order to protect their networks from attack and data breaches.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK (VodafoneThree) has today confirmed that they’ve now gone live on CommunityFibre’s alternative Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based fixed line network in London. The provider says this means that 550,000 “additional” homes across all 32 boroughs can now access their broadband plans at speeds of “up to” 2.2Gbps.

In news that will surprise none of ISPreview’s regular readers. Several major UK banks, such as NatWest and Lloyds, among others, have confirmed that they’re setting aside funding to cover loans that were issued to alternative fibre broadband networks (altnets) and which are now deemed unlikely to be repaid in full.

Mobile and broadband ISP EE (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview that the approach they currently take on their top 1.6Gbps speed Full Fibre (FTTP) package, which partly cuts BT Wholesale out of the equation, is set to be adopted across their slower tiers too (900Mbps and lower). But customers aren’t expected to notice any real difference.

Alternative network ISP CommunityFibre, which has so far built their 5Gbps speed full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to cover 1.342 million UK homes (plus c.200k businesses) – mostly in London, today claims to have become one of the first altnets to launch an international data roaming eSIM mobile service – available across over 160 countries.

Fixed wireless and broadband provider Connexin, which is in the process of being acquired by CityFibre (here), has today revealed that their existing Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) network has already connected 250,000 smart water meters across parts of the UK.

Infracapital-backed UK ISP Fibrus today confirmed the completion of their £200m (state aid) Project Stratum contract in Northern Ireland, which helped to spread their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 81,000 addition premises in poorly served rural areas “on time and within budget.”

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which sells ultrafast broadband to the UK and globally via a mega constellation using thousands of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has revealed the development of a new “mini laser” that will enable their satellites to connect with “third party satellites and space stations“.

The Managing Director of Regulation at UK broadband operator Openreach (BT), Mark Shurmer, has called on Ofcom to ensure that they soften market regulation on them in areas of the UK deemed to be competitive due to the presence of either Virgin Media’s fixed broadband network or those where there are three or more full fibre (FTTP) network providers present.
