Broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have this afternoon announced that they’ve hired their 1,000th apprentice. The move follows the August 2025 launch of their new £1 million Apprenticeship Talent Fund, which is creating funded opportunities for smaller organisations to train apprentices and build a future workforce.
The company’s 1,000th apprentice, Taylor Allanson, is said to have joined as an apprentice field technician based in South London earlier in the summer. The move comes after VMO2 announced, at the start of 2025, that they intended to create more than 100 early UK careers and re-skilling opportunities during 2025, which is about half the intake figure of 2024 (here) and down from the c.350 they pledged to create during 2023 (here).
Karen Handley, Head of Future Careers at VMO2, said: “We’re marking this milestone 1,000th hire with a powerful celebration of how apprenticeships can change people’s lives. Our apprentices bring fresh perspectives, ambition, and energy to our business, and many have gone on to build inspiring careers with us. This film captures their stories and shines a light on the life-changing impact apprenticeships can have.”

It’s great to see a company giving younger people a chance instead of expecting them to just go off to uni.
I’ve done a VM apprenticeship, ended up having a few roles there. Left a few years ago, really enjoyed the role I was doing when I left but the money just wasn’t good enough. Also higher management really didn’t have a clue, a new director/head of department would come in, build a house of cards and move onto another dept just before it collapsed, then rinse and repeat.
And teh retantion rate at 1, 3 5 and 10 years is?
