ISP Gigaclear, which runs a number of 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) networks in rural parts of England, has joined forces with internet voice provider Vonage in order to potentially cut the price of its packages by removing the cost of a traditional landline phone service.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) appears to have awarded a grant worth £2.74 million to help over 2,600 small and medium sized businesses in Northumberland (North East England) gain access to superfast and ultrafast broadband ISP connectivity via a “range of incentives“.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again banned a press advert for Virgin Media’s bundles after BT complained that one of their promotions misleadingly implied that tv, broadband and calls could all be had for £3.50 a month when in fact they couldn’t.

at800.tv (DMSL), which was setup by UK mobile operators to support homes that could lose their digital terrestrial TV services due to interference from 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services in the 800MHz spectrum band, has announced that its first major urban test will take place in South East London from 15th April 2013.

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that a “major outage“, which left a large area of West London (England) without broadband and TV services for around 24 hours from Sunday night, was caused by an attempted theft at one of its key network hubs.

BT WiFi has signed a new deal with real-estate investment firm PRUPIM that will see eight of the United Kingdom’s biggest shopping centres deploying a free wireless internet (public wifi hotspot) service, which should reach more than 118 million shoppers.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has announced that it will double the amount of 1800MHz radio spectrum bandwidth dedicated to its 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network (from 10MHz to 20MHz at each cell), which will boost network capacity and could deliver headline speeds of 80Mbps (average speeds of 20Mbps).

BT has today confirmed that its national £2.5bn commercial rollout of fibre optic based superfast broadband (FTTC / FTTP) ISP services, which is set to reach 66% of the UK by spring 2014 (18 months ahead of schedule), has now passed more than 15 million premises (the operators 2014 target is for 19m).

The 2013 Halifax Rural Areas Quality of Life Survey has reported that residents of Waverley in Surrey (England, UK) have the best quality of life of any rural area in Great Britain. More generally the South East was found to have the highest level of households with access to “fast broadband“.

The ITU and UNESCO’s Broadband Commission has called upon the United Nations to ensure that high-speed broadband internet access “features prominently” in any plans for a Post-2015 Development Agenda, which is expected to set various world targets for the next five or so years until at least 2020.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has signed a new wholesale agreement with Virgin Media that will allow its WiFi customers access to a free wireless internet service at 120 London Underground train stations from June 2013.

Customers of Sky Broadband in northern England and southern Scotland (e.g. Cumbria, Lancashire, Dumfries and Galloway etc.) were left without internet access for several days between Friday and Sunday after an unspecified “daisy chain outage” hit several telephone exchanges on the ISPs network.

The seemingly endless tit-for-tat row between BT and TalkTalk over competition in the growing market for fibre optic based superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services took another hostile turn over the weekend after BT’s CEO, Ian Livingston, accused rival ISPs of “trying to stop the fibre programme so they can sweat their own copper assets“.

The results from 1045 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly reader survey has found that 80.8% would like to see the government put more public money into deploying superfast broadband around the United Kingdom (up from 68.8% two years ago) and 62.5% said the effort should re-focus on connecting rural areas first.

Researchers working at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin (Germany) have taken their Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology, which makes it possible to use standard “off-the-shelf” LED (Light-Emitting Diode) room lights for data transmission, to the next level by boosting the speed up to 3Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The Welsh Government’s £4m Broadband Support Scheme, which offers grants worth up to £1,000 to help those living in rural parts of Wales where sub-2Mbps internet download speeds or “NotSpots” still exist, has been extended by six months after it was originally scheduled to close on 31st March 2013.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has told angry customers that it’s “extremely sorry” after the ISPs planned migration from their existing Google (Gmail) based email platform to a new Yahoo! webmail alternative (Sky Yahoo! Mail) ended in disaster when user inboxes become flooded with old and deleted messages.
