Three UK Confirm December 2013 Launch and Prices for 4G Mobile

Three UK has today moved to steal some of O2 and Vodafone’s thunder by announcing that its new 800MHz and possibly 1800MHz based superfast 4G (LTE) Mobile Broadband network will officially launch during December 2013 in the cities of London, Birmingham and Manchester (England).

Mobile operators O2 and Vodafone, which have a joint network sharing deal (here), will today switch-on their first superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband networks using the new 800MHz frequency band in London (England). Both operators have a similar rollout plan and packages (albeit with different content offers).

UK ISP TalkTalk Confirms 500000 YouView Broadband TV Subscribers

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has announced that its YouView (IPTV) based Plus TV bundle has now managed to attract 500,000 subscribers, which comes 11 months after launching the service and represents 12.28% of their total broadband customer base (4,071,000).

EE 4G Rollout Reaches 60% of the UK Population in 105 Towns and Cities

Mobile operator EE has confirmed that their superfast 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network has now been switched-on in 105 towns and cities, which has pushed the total network coverage out to reach over 60% of the United Kingdom.

ASA UK Reject BT Complaints Against Virgin Media Broadband TV Advert

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has rejected two BT complaints against a TV advert for Virgin Media’s service that featured actor David Tennant. BT claimed that Virgin’s advert “misleadingly implied that VirginMedia customers always received “superfast” broadband speeds” and “exaggerated the difference in the performance“.

UPD BT Sign GBP16.9m Superfast Broadband Contract for Leicestershire UK

The Leicestershire County Council (LCC) in England (midlands) has today signed a new state aid supported £16.9 million deal with BT that should result in 95% of the region being given access to the operators new high-speed “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) internet access network by March 2016 (the last 5% will get at least 2Mbps).

Mobile Operator and ISP EE Increase UK Customer Service Jobs by 300

Mobile operator and fixed line broadband ISP EE (Everything Everywhere) has announced that it will shortly create another 300 jobs in customer services across the United Kingdom and 200 of those will be based in south Wales (Merthyr Tydfil).

BT Add 150 Engineers in Scotland to Help Superfast Broadband Rollout

The company that works to maintain and upgrade BT’s national UK telecoms network, Openreach, has today announced the addition of another 150 new engineers to help deploy its latest superfast broadband (FTTC / FTTP) ISP services to people around Scotland.

Study Finds 36% of WiFi Hotspots in London are Completely Unsecured

A live experiment conducted at six locations around central London (UK) has revealed that 36% (322) of the wifi hotspots identified were “completely unsecure” and potentially a ripe playground for hackers and fraudsters. A related poll also found that only a third of people consider how secure a WiFi network is before connecting.

UK ISP Etico Solutions Escapes Ofcom Fine for Broadband Migration Woes

The little known Internet provider Etico Solutions, which is based at the same address as long defunct ISPs EurISP and Aspire Internet (related news here and here), has escaped punishment from Ofcom after the regulator opened an investigation into their alleged failure to supply customers with a broadband migration code upon request.

UK Map Suggests Superfast Broadband Coverage Still on Target for 2015

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today published a new report on broadband coverage across the United Kingdom, which predicts that superfast (30Mbps+) availability could hit 90.8% by the end of 2015. ISPreview.co.uk has also been able to obtain an exclusive map that splits the presence of fibre FTTx and cable (DOCSIS) networks.

Worcestershire UK Allow BT to Overlap Existing Superfast Broadband Network

The Worcestershire County Council (WCC), which recently signed a state aid supported £20.75m deal with BT to make “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) available to 90% of local premises by mid-2016 (here), has warned that it could use some of the money to overbuild an existing superfast wireless broadband network.

Sony has announced that its forthcoming PlayStation 4 (PS4) video games console, which is officially confirmed to arrive in the United Kingdom on 29th November 2013, has chosen broadband provider Virgin Media to be its main ISP partner. Rumours of a new 200Mbps product are also floating around.

Customers of Virgin Media’s superfast 30Mbps and legacy 20Mbps cable broadband packages have been advised that the monthly price they pay will, effective from 1st October 2013, rise by an extra £2.50 a month.
