Wireless ISP Airband Bring Broadband to 14 Worcestershire UK Parishes

Fixed wireless ISP Airband has announced that over 100 customers in three parishes across rural parts of Worcestershire (England’s West Midlands) can now access faster broadband connections “for the first time” thanks to a £700k scheme supported by the Worcestershire County Council (WCC).

Superfast Broadband Passed 19.6 Million UK Premises at the End of 2012

Telecoms analyst Point Topic reports that, at the end of last year, superfast broadband ISP connections had passed 19.6 Million premises in the United Kingdom (up from 16.9m in June 2012) and 3.3 Million had subscribed to one of the related services.

HIE Says 75% of Shetland Islands Should Get Superfast Broadband

Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Enterprise has “guaranteed” to help connect “at least” 75% of homes and businesses on the remote Shetland Islands to a new superfast broadband network by the end of 2015, which forms part of HIE’s wider £146 million investment into new fibre optic based infrastructure.

Cisco Expect Global Average Fixed Broadband Speeds to Hit 39Mbps in 2017

Cisco has published its annual 2013 Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast, which predicts that global internet (IP) traffic (fixed line and mobile) will grow from 44 Exabytes per month in 2012 to 121 Exabytes by 2017 (annual run rate of 1.4 Zettabytes). As usual this will be driven by faster broadband ISP technologies and online video content, especially in the UK.

UK Opposes EU Measures for Cutting Broadband Deployment Costs

The House of Commons has advised the President of the Council of the European Union that it objects to the European Commission’s proposals to cut the cost of broadband related civil engineering tasks (e.g. digging up roads to lay new fibre optic cable) because the measures “do not comply” with the principle of subsidiarity.

BT Broadband Advert Banned for Failing to Show 10GB Usage Limit

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a direct mailing advert for BT’s Total Broadband service after a consumer complained that the promotion was misleading because it failed to state that a monthly usage allowance of 10GB applied to the package.

Network specialist Ciena and BT claim to have conducted the “world’s first” successful trials of 800G Super-Channel technology using the operators optical core network infrastructure in the United Kingdom, which delivered “Terabit-rate speeds” over a 410km link between their Adastral Park facility in Ipswich and the BTTower in London.
