Fixed wireless broadband ISP VFast (Orbitalnet), which covers a large swathe of Kent in South East England, has partnered with internet voice provider Vonage to offer residential Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services and cheaper UK or international calls.

The Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) responsible for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, has proposed a new EU “safeguard” to ensure that broadband ISPs and mobile operators give every citizen a “guarantee of access to the full and open internet, without any blocking or throttling of competing services“.

Customers of Virgin Media’s cable broadband and TV network in Portsmouth on the south coast of England could be left without service for up to three days after contractors conducting roadworks cut through one of the operators vital cables. Separately Virgin are also testing a new Traffic Management policy on the 100Mbps+ package.

The latest anecdotal monthly study of consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk has found that the average download speed in the United Kingdom has fallen from 19.014Mbps in April to 18.180Mbps in May 2013. Average upload speeds also hit 2.881Mbps (down from 3.068Mbps).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) appears to have become the first major UK ISP to extend its court ordered censorship of specific websites that facilitate internet piracy (e.g. The Pirate Bay) to include a wide range of proxy servers, which allows users to bypass such blocks without needing to use a VPN or other solution.

It’s been a long time coming but the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has informed ISPreview.co.uk that their chosen method for making it both “simpler and more reliable” for consumers to switch phone or broadband ISP is finally close to being announced. No really, this time it’ll actually happen. We hope.

Customers who take BT’s Line Rental Saver solution alongside their phone or broadband bundles, which allows you to save a fair bit of money by paying for a year’s line rental in advance, will be displeased to learn that the cost has just risen from £129 to £141 (up 9%). ISPs around the UK are likely to follow suit.

BTOpenreach has today officially made its new 220Mbps (20Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband service, which will eventually replace its old 110Mbps/100Mbps products, available to UK ISPs and their customers.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has confirmed that its Plus and entry-level Essentials fixed line broadband products will no longer apply Traffic Management during peak times, which effectively makes the products “totally unlimited” instead of merely “unlimited“. Yes there’s a difference.

The East Sussex County Council (ESCC) in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Councils (Southern England) has signed a new £35.44 million state aid supported contract with BT to roll-out superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services to 96% of local premises “within the next three years” (mid-2016).

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today announced the official launch of its new SuperHub V2 wireless broadband modem and router, which it describes as being the “fastest wireless hub in the UK” thanks to their new concurrent dual band wifi (5GHz and 2.4GHz) technology.

Management consultancy giant Arthur D. Little has published a new paper that examines the importance of investing in better telecoms infrastructure. It also predicts that the UK might need to adopt ultrafast (100Mbps+) fibre optic FTTH broadband “over the next five years“, unless G.Fast is realised to expand the life of FTTC.
