Gigabit-broadband builder G.Network, which is busy investing £1bn to deploy a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across London and beyond (here), has today become the latest in a small group of UK ISPs to launch a cheaper social tariff (‘Essential Fibre‘) that is aimed at “Londoners on lower incomes“.

A number of weekend reports have claimed that the UK Government is close to securing a significant £10bn investment from the Australian-based Macquarie Group, which would go toward various British infrastructure projects in the digital infrastructure (i.e. fibre broadband and mobile) and energy sectors.

Broadband ISP, pay TV and mobile giant Virgin Media (VMO2) has announced that they intend to mark National Apprenticeship Week (7-13 February 2022) by creating more than 200 new apprenticeship roles across the UK in 2022. The move comes after BT pledged to recruit over 600 apprentices and graduates this year.

The Broadband Delivery UK team have just published a new batch of Public Reviews (PR) and Open Market Reviews (OMR) for additional parts of England – mostly covered by Phase 2 of the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout. Both aim to identify which areas need state aid support for future builds.

Since April 2017 the UK Government has allowed broadband networks to claim 100% business rates relief on new fibre infrastructure, but this “Fibre Tax” holiday is about to expire and there’s been no indication of an extension. Some operators fear this will add “significant cost and uncertainty to the investment case for full fibre.”

The Government’s new Online Safety Bill (OSB), which tasks Ofcom with tackling “harmful” content online through website bans, fines and other sanctions, has today extended the legislation via a new list of “criminal content” (e.g. online drug and weapons dealing, people smuggling, revenge porn, fraud etc.) for tech firms to remove as a priority.

Some of EE’s UK mobile customers, specifically those who are currently roaming in the USA or Canada, have complained of being hit by massive data (mobile broadband) bills – some rising into the thousands of pounds – and of unexpected account suspensions. This is despite the users having a free roaming add-on enabled.

The BT Group has published their Q3 2021/22 results, which saw Openreach expand the coverage of gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 6.44 million UK premises (up by +662K vs +615K in Q2) and BT enter into “exclusive discussions” with Discovery to create a 50:50 joint venture with BTSport and Eurosport UK.

UK ISP Giganet, which is investing £250m to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 300,000 premises across South England (here), has moved to buck the wider industry trend of huge annual price hikes by committing not to increase their prices in 2022.

Mobile operator Smarty has today taken a stand against the current trend of communications providers imposing huge annual price hikes, which it has done by pledging to new and existing customers that it will “not … introduce annual mid contract price rises” or RPI (inflation) linked annual price rises.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that they’re giving all of their Pay TV customers access to more than 20 “documentary, entertainment and music channels” at “no extra cost” throughout February 2022, which includes a variety of channels such as Comedy Central, MTV, Sky History and more.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today launched a “brand-new” Superfast 35 package, which offers average advertised download speeds of 36Mbps (with a “speed guarantee” of 25Mbps) and uploads of 9Mbps for the lower price of £25 per month via Openreach’s national FTTC (VDSL2) and FTTP networks. But it’s not all that ‘new’.

The government will today publish their “flagship” Levelling Up White Paper, which sets out their “plan to transform the UK by spreading opportunity and prosperity to all parts of it” and also confirms their revised broadband target – that “by 2030, the UK will have nationwide gigabit-capable broadband.”
