The £132 Million “Big Build” Superfast Cornwall project, which aims to make BT’s superfast broadband ISP services available to at least 80% (ideally 90%) of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has expanded its availability to a quarter of all premises (66,000 Cornish premises) in the region.

The governments Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has just released a new map of UK superfast broadband availability that covers 36 large towns and cities (i.e. those where the number of dwellings exceeds 100,000) across the country.

Europe’s Digital Agenda strategy, which among other things aims to make superfast broadband ISP speeds of 30Mbps+ available to everybody by 2020, could deliver a “digital bonus” worth up to £93.29 Billion (110bn Euros Annually) in regional Gross Domestic Product (more than 0.8% of GDP).

Metronet UK, which claims to run the country’s most advanced hybrid wired and wireless broadband network, has warned that some businesses could face a “crippling” impact upon their office networks as a result of the “anticipated bandwidth headaches” that are expected to stem from this summer’s London 2012 Olympic Games event.

The Shadow Deputy Prime Minister, Harriet Harman MP (Labour Party), has demanded that the UK government establish a “clear timetable” for implementation of its highly controversial Digital Economy Act (DEA), which aims to reduce internet copyright infringement (piracy) by imposing a series of costly new measures upon broadband ISPs and their customers (e.g. warning letters, service restrictions, disconnection etc.).

A new service called Connect TV has launched today that makes use of your existing broadband ISP connection to add internet delivered video/TV content ( IPTV ) to all “compliant” Freeview devices, which are apparently available in up to 5.5 million UK households (others are likely to require a newer set-top-box or software upgrade).

The Director of business focused broadband provider AAISP (Andrews & Arnold), Adrian Kennard, has warned that customers whom “refuse” to pay their bills on time could face “court proceedings after a week or two at the most“. At present most ISPs would consider costly court action to be a method of last resort, with Debt Collection Agencies usually being deployed first.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has released its latest quarterly results to the end of December 2011 (Q4-2011), which showed that their rate of fixed line home broadband subscriber decline had significantly slowed from -27,600 in Q3 to -5,000 in Q4 for a new total of 620,300.
