The Competition Appeal Tribunal‘s (CAT) decision last week to reject CityFibre’s appeal against Ofcom’s approval process for Openreach’s “Equinox” price cut (here), which slashed the cost of the incumbent’s wholesale FTTP broadband products for UK ISPs, may not have been a total loss for the alternative network operator.

Hull-based UK broadband ISP KCOM has, thus far, been fairly quiet on the operator’s plans to withdraw their older copper-based broadband (ADSL and VDSL) and phone (PSTN) products. But a recent update, which was given to their wholesale customers, appears to have included a solid indication of the likely timeline.

A new alternative network (altnet) operator called Connect InfraCo, which has close links to UK ISP Connexin, has cropped up with a plan to rollout a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband platform to homes and businesses in the North of England, albeit “primarily” in a wholesale capacity.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today cleared BT Group’s agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is intended to result in a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) company between BT Sport and Eurosport UK that will create a new TV sports offering for the UK and Ireland.

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has been hit by yet another controversy after it “terminated” two contracts with Bath-based broadband ISP Truespeed, which had suffered delays in its £6.7m (public investment) deal to deploy a full fibre network to cover 15,172 premises.

European satellite operator Eutelsat, which is also the parent of UK ISP Konnect (We Konnect), has announced that their next generation Very High Throughput Satellite (VHTS) is finally on its way to Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou (French Guiana), ready to be launched via an Ariane 5 rocket on 6th September 2022.

Openreach (BT) has published the Tranche 9 batch of 65 new UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

The CEO of UK ISP 4th Utility, Tony Hughes, has today said that access to reliable broadband should be a basic human right and that now is the time for the Government to “rethink” their investment in the High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project. Instead, Tony believes that such funding should be diverted to upgrade broadband infrastructure.

Some 300 homes across Scotland’s most westerly mainland point – the Ardnamurchan Peninsula – now have access to superfast broadband speeds of 35 – 100Mbps after local ISP Scotnet, supported by the government’s voucher scheme, deployed a new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network to serve the area.

Good news. Openreach has announced that their direct end customer contact programme is leaving the trial phase and will shortly start to be adopted by broadband ISPs as part of normal business, which will improve the level of contact made between the network operator and consumers for certain installation and repair work.

The Government’s Digital Secretary, Nadine Dorries MP, has appointed Simon Blagden CBE to be the new chair of their Building Digital UK (BDUK) executive agency, which has responsibility for delivering faster broadband and mobile networks across the nation (e.g. the £5bn Project Gigabit scheme and the £1bn Shared Rural Network).

The Welsh Government has issued an easy to miss statement on Digital Connectivity in Wales, which among other things reveals that their £52.5m Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout contract with Openreach (BT) is now expected to cover slightly more premises. But this will push completion back to 31st March 2023.

A number of UK network operators appear to be sending out engineers to monitor and work on broadband street cabinets that have been struggling in today’s heat. This includes everything from upgrading vents and fans, to literally sitting outside the cabinet with an umbrella. Sometimes, the simplest solution works best.
