Cityfibre has announced that they’ve begun their £25m project to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the District of Adur and Borough of Worthing in West Sussex, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk expected to follow later).

Good news, the Scottish Government‘s £25m 4G Infill Programme, which originally aimed to improve rural mobile coverage (mostly notspots across the Highlands and Islands) by building a network of 45 new masts for UK mobile operators to use (here), has finally built its first mast. Bad news, they’re well behind schedule.

A new study from Uswitch.com, which is based on an Opinium survey of 2,000 adults (conducted in October 2019), has claimed that 71% of UK households (19.6 million) have experienced speed-related issues with their broadband ISP service, which is despite “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) lines being available to c.96% of premises.

As well as securing a £7.5m four-year contract extension to continue providing network and IT services to Norfolk County Council (NCC) in England, Capita has today also announced that they’ve picked up the £6m contract to deploy a new “full fibre” network to reach local public sector sites.

The UK Government has today announced £65m in public funding to help conduct “innovative” new R&D trials of 5G style applications and specific wireless broadband connectivity solutions, which among other things includes £30m for nine projects under the Rural Connected Communities (RCC) programme.

Ofcom has lost its appeal against last year’s ruling by the UK High Court of Justice (here), which ordered them to repay £218m to mobile operators as part of restitution for their handling of a licence fee hike to the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands (i.e. £82.4m to EE, £54m for Vodafone, £54m for O2 and £26m for Three UK).

The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has approved a new public investment of £20 million (mostly funded by last year’s business rates deal) to support their new “Full Fibre Programme,” which aims to increase “full fibre” and maximise coverage of gigabit-capable broadband services across the county.

The London-based property investment firm Avon Group has today signed a 2 year partnership with UK fibre ISP Virgin Media, which will see the operator upgrade some 10,000 properties across London, Birmingham and Leeds to support their new gigabit-capable broadband and TV network.

Credible sources have helped ISPreview.co.uk to uncover plans by Openreach (BT) to introduce a significant new discount on Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband lines for UK ISPs, which is expected to be finalised in time for a launch toward the end of the year (possibly around October).

Cardiff-based UK ISP Spectrum Internet has announced that they intend to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across South Wales, which will aim to cover 150,000 premises (homes and businesses) in various market towns and villages.

Rural UK ISP County Broadband, which is being fuelled by £46m from Aviva to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the rural East of England, has announced their first expansion into South Cambridgeshire, where they initially plan to build across 9 hard to reach villages.

The Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC) in East Sussex has agreed to invest £1.66m into a new 3 mile long fibre optic ring network in the centre of Brighton, which will be used to connect up key public sector sites in the city centre with the Brighton Digital Exchange (BDX) and a 5G mobile test bed at New England House.

Mobile operator Three UK, which from the end of this month will have expanded their new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network to cover 65 new locations (here), has signed a new nationwide backhaul capacity deal to harness Cityfibre’s growing full fibre network in order to fuel their new service.

Just like clockwork Sky (Sky Broadband) has this week announced a new set of annual price hikes, which for some broadband customers will see the monthly price they pay increase by an extra £2 from 1st April 2020. But newer Sky “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and some TV plans will not be increased.

Broadband ISP BT will today soft launch a new range of “flexible” TV packages on 24 month contract terms, which gives subscribers a choice of content bolt-ons that can easily be changed. As part of that the platform has also completed its promise to fully integrate Sky’s NOW TV service via a single bill.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media recently confirmed that it intends to close 25 of its stores and kiosks across the United Kingdom, which will put around 110 jobs at risk. Once completed the move will leave around 53 stores and kiosks open across the country but staff fear that more may follow.
