Last year Virgin Media launched an invitation-only trial that gave “selected customers” of their broadband ISP and TV network a special discount on Plume‘s smart home Mesh WiFi system (here). Now parent operator Liberty Global has signed a new deal that seeks to expand the service to all customers.

Cable and full fibre ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has confirmed that they’ve just completed the build of their 516Mbps (average download speed) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover an additional 3,000 homes and businesses in the Essex town of Wickford.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve become the exclusive partner for the new BritBox video streaming service, which among other things means that customers of their existing Pay Monthly mobile and tablet (4G and 5G) plans will receive a free 6 subscription to the service (starting on 13th March 2020).

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk, which is currently in the process of selling their FibreNation FTTH network to Cityfibre for £200m (here), has today announced a £500m corporate bond issue that looks like it will be used to help refinance the provider’s existing debt pile.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has announced that the first 50 sites are already live on their new 4G mobile based UK LTE-M (Long Term Evolution for Machines) standard, which is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN / LPWA) service that is designed to connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

In an unsurprising development Virgin Media’s parent company, Liberty Global, has announced a 3-year extension to their existing distribution deal with Netflix’s popular internet video streaming service. The TV and broadband provider was one of the very first UK ISP’s to fully integrate Netflix into their platform and offer a single bill.

Low cost UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has informed ISPreview.co.uk that online video games are increasingly producing significant surges in internet data traffic on their network. Indeed they’re braced for another “massive spike” tomorrow with the release of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare Season 2 update (v1.14).

UK ISP BT (EE) has today announced that they’ve extended the availability of their new “superfast” 5G mobile network to all customers. Previously you could only get access to 5G on BT by taking one of their special “Halo” converged plans alongside a fixed broadband package.

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is today reportedly gearing up to announce a fresh round of new capital investment in major infrastructure projects (HS2 etc.), which is expected to include a pot of £40 million to support pilots of superfast 5G based wireless (mobile) broadband in rural areas.

Broadband ISP BT has begun inviting some UK customers of their BT Mobile service to take part in a new London underground Wi-Fi trial, which will start mid-March 2020 and run for approximately 3 weeks. Those taking part will be given one month’s credit for the number they use (applied post-trial and subject to feedback).

The Government’s new 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband is due to start next month, although for some ISPs Ofcom’s approach to eligibility has created a few puzzled faces. As a result some people may live in areas covered by a 1Gbps FTTH ISP, yet still be able to request the USO.

Fibre optic UK broadband ISP Trooli (CallFlow), which last year secured €30m from European investors (here) and extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 10,000 homes and businesses (mostly in Kent and Hampshire), has today gained a further £5m of funding via a senior facility agreement with NatWest Bank.

The Welsh Government (WG), which is currently working with Openreach (BT) to extend gigabit-capable”full fibre” (FTTP) broadband to a further 26,000 premises by March 2021 (here and here), has announced that they intend to open some of their own telecoms ducts up for use by ISPs to help boost connectivity and capacity supplies.

The annual Uswitch.com Awards 2020 took place last night, which among other categories saw budget focused UK ISP NOW TV scoop the win for “Broadband Provider of the Year“, while Virgin Media once again grabbed “Fastest Broadband Provider” and Sky Mobile were named “Network of the Year.” Read on for the full list.

Lately we’ve heard a lot of remarks like this: “5G harms human health“, “5G kills bees“,”5G causes cancer“, “overwhelming evidence says 5G is dangerous” and “we have no evidence this technology is safe.” Such statements are often being repeated in opposition to new UK mobile masts, but are they right and should we be concerned.

Cityfibre has secured the contract to roll-out a new “full fibre” (Dark Fibre) network to connect 170 public sector sites (e.g. schools, libraries and offices) across the West Midlands city of Wolverhampton. The deal is being supported by £4.9m of public funding under the UK Gov’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) scheme.

A small but important update has just been issued, which confirms that UK rural “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear has reached a settlement with the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project. As part of that the provider will continue a commitment to complete the work in areas that were started under the former contracts.
