Cisco has published their 12th annual 2017 Visual Networking Index (VNI), which predicts that world Internet (IP) traffic will grow from 96EB (ExaBytes) a month in 2016 to 278EB in 2021. Elsewhere average fixed broadband speeds in the UK will double from 29.8Mbps in 2016 to 60.2Mbps by 2021.

A team of security researchers working at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel have developed a new piece of Malware called xLED, which can control a broadband router and turn the device’s front-panel LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights into a transmission method for hackers or spies.

The latest independent data for June 2017 has estimated that fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks are now available to 93% of premises across the United Kingdom (96.1% if you include all “fibre based” lines, such as sub-24Mbps services), although some parts are lagging behind.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a major TV advert for Sky Broadband, which featured Lego Batman, after it misleadingly claimed to offer the “UK’s lowest priced fibre including line rental” and also featured on-screen text that “did not present the qualifications clearly.”

Forget about future 5G for today. Mobile operator EE has begun the process of deploying their latest 4G+ (LTE-Advanced) network upgrade to several cities across the United Kingdom, which have already demonstrated live download speeds of up to 429Mbps (66.4Mbps upload).

A new study from the UK telecoms regulator has found “no evidence” to support claims made by the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), which had complained that Openreach’s (BT) VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband technology had “resulted in interference to radio reception.”

Telecoms giant BT has today published a new report that examines their environmental impact, which among other things reveals that their UK retail ISP division has refurbished 500,000+ HomeHub broadband routers over the past 18 months (these are used to replace any that customers return as faulty).

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 1,384 website readers has found that the vast majority of respondents do know how to use their broadband router’s admin interface (92.5%), although 25.9% have never changed the default Wi-Fi password and 23.9% haven’t changed their router’s admin password.

Residents of two rural villages – Leck (Lancashire) and Ingleton (North Yorkshire) – were left without access to B4RN’s 1Gbps community built Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network on Friday afternoon (2nd June @ around 4:30pm) after vandals dug up and cut one of their core cable ducts.

Mobile operator EE has introduced Welsh language customer service for people in Wales and confirmed that they intend to boost 4G geographic network coverage of Wales from 40% at the start of 2016 to 90% by the end of 2017 (overall UK coverage will reach 95% by the same date).
