The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has today warned in a new report that “inadequate” mobile (4G, 5G etc.) connectivity continues to be a big problem on the UK’s railways, which they blame on the government being “slow” to fix related gaps in connectivity due to a lack of leadership.

The Northumberland County Council in England appears to be proposing a new plan to the UK Government, which – if funding can be secured – would see the local authority using their own skills and resources to help dig new “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks into remote rural communities (inc. installations direct to homes).

After a long wait our sources inform us that Sky Broadband (Comcast) are imminently due to add support for Openreach’s (BT) national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to their range of both “superfast” and “ultrafast” packages, which looks increasingly likely to go live later this month (provided some issues can be ironed out first).

The YouView platform, which develops hardware and software to support the broadband-based TV (IPTV) services supplied via UK ISPs BT and TalkTalk (as well as retail set-top-boxes), has announced that they’re “refocusing development away from ‘direct to consumer’ products.” Say goodbye to their mobile app!

Mobile giant and UK ISP Vodafone has published their latest quarterly results to the end of December 2019 (financial Q3 19/20), which saw them add +20,000 fixed broadband customers to total 687,000 (down from +61k added in the previous quarter) and mobile customers jumped to total 18,056,000 (up by +250k)

As if we didn’t have enough conflicting studies. French company nPerf has now decided to start publishing an annual study of UK mobile operator (mobile broadband) performance, which is based off crowd-sourced data. Overall the inaugural study finds that Vodafone UK provided the “Best Mobile Internet Performance” in 2019.

City focused full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic has conducted a new survey of 228 housing professionals and 2,000 UK homeowners or renters, which unsurprisingly reveals that most respondents now consider good broadband connectivity to be the “4th utility” alongside water, gas and electricity.

A new Birmingham-based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) called Zevvle has launched with a different twist on pay-as-you-go data (mobile broadband) pricing, which is intended to help prevent customers from overpaying for data they don’t use by discounting the price as you consume an increasing amount.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has today announced that they’ve appointed TalkTalk’s former Commercial Director, Jon Perkins, to become their new Strategy Director. Perkins will also sit on Zen’s Executive Committee and be responsible for strategy, marketing and product.

The £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) agreement between BT (EE), Vodafone, Three UK and O2, which aims to extend geographic 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by 2025, could be in doubt after some of the participants expressed concern over high costs. A key meeting is due to discuss the issue today.

Scotland-based UK business ISP Commsworld today claims to have become the first operator to take advantage of Openreach’s (BT) new Dark Fibre X (DFX) product, which is only focused upon serving the limited inter-exchange connectivity market. As a result broadband speeds of 10Gbps may reach several Borders towns.

Cityfibre’s £100m project to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk to follow later), has finally started to go live and connect their first customers.

Complaints made by Virgin Media and Three UK have today resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning several adverts for Vodafone’s new “unlimited data” mobile plans, which primarily occurred because of a failure to clearly express the related mobile broadband speed restrictions (especially on 5G).

Cable and full fibre ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that their network has just completed another extension to cover 2,500 homes in the large villages of Moira and Magheralin (County Down, Northern Ireland), which harnesses their 516Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network (top speeds to hit 1Gbps by 2021).

Civil engineering firm Morrison Telecom Services (MTS), part of the M Group Services, has today secured an Openreach (BT) Network Services Agreement (ONSA), which will see them helping the operator to deploy and maintain their fibre broadband ISP networks across multiple parts of the UK.

Ofcom’s latest annual ‘Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes‘ report has found that 9 out of 10 parents who use the network-level internet content filters provided by big UK broadband ISPs find them beneficial, but many still don’t use them and a fair few children can circumvent these systems.

Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today announced plans to transform its business and cut emissions in order to achieve net zero carbon by 2030. By comparison the UK telecoms giant BT expects to achieve the same target by 2045 and Virgin Media appears to have aligned itself with the RE100 initiative’s 2050 target.
