RootMetrics has published their biannual H2 2019 study of mobile network (3G and 4G) performance across the United Kingdom, which once again named EE (BT) as the best overall operator and they also delivered the fastest aggregate median (average) mobile broadband download speed of 36.5Mbps.

Global Wireless Solutions has published the results of their latest “extensive national” study into mobile network (4G etc.) performance across 36 cities, which is one of the few to name O2 as the overall “most reliable network” (followed by EE, Vodafone and Three UK). But it’s not just a question of mobile broadband speed.

UK ISP Giganet today appears to have become one of the first providers to reveal how much they will charge at retail for Openreach’s new 550Mbps and 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tiers, which are due to go live from 23rd March 2020. But there’s a catch.. the pricing is currently only for homes in Salisbury.

Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT Group has today announced that they intend to hire a further 700+ UK apprentices and graduates as part of their September 2020 intake plan, which is down from the 900 that have been added over the past 12 months.

RFBenchmark has just published their annual crowd-sourced study of Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G, 5G) speed across Europe, which reveals that the United Kingdom delivered an average download rate of 17.6Mbps (up from 17.2Mbps last year), uploads of 8.7Mbps (up from 8.54Mbps) and latency of 62ms (improved from 71ms).

Fibre optic builder Cityfibre, which has a £4bn ambition to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 8 million UK homes and businesses, has revealed that their deployment to the Dorset city of Bournemouth will be extended into Poole and Christchurch “as soon as possible.”

Customers of broadband ISP BT, specifically those who still make use of their Yahoo! (BTYahoo Mail) based email platform, look set to face another significant migration. Sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the provider intends to move away from the trouble prone Yahoo! once and for all, but they’ve kept it very hush hush.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today reported their first trading update (Q3 FY2020 financial) since they agreed to sell their full fibre FibreNation network to Cityfibre for £200m (here). The provider, which is home to 4.3 million broadband customers, added 148k new FTTC/P customers in the quarter (down from 174k in Q2 FY20).

Good progress is being made by rivals SpaceX and OneWeb, which are both now rapidly moving into a new phase of large-scale deployments on the road to creating two mega constellations of compact Low Earth Orbit (LEO) ultrafast broadband satellites; these should eventually offer “fibre like” speeds to consumers across the world.

In a somewhat unsurprising development the Government has again warned UK people that the current “guarantee of free mobile phone roaming” throughout the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway “will end” on 1st January 2021, which marks the conclusion of the imminent 11 month Brexit transition period.

Ofcom has today announced that they intend to toughen their existing Broadband Speed Code of Practice, which among other things requires UK ISPs to supply consumers with a personal estimate of their broadband line speed before buying. Under the new change this estimate will become more accurate, but there’s a catch.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has completed their community driven project to roll-out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 12 rural villages in the Test and Dun Valleys of Hampshire and Wiltshire, which since starting in 2018 (here) has now covered a total of 4,000 local homes and businesses.

The BT Group’s results for Q3 2019/20 (financial) have revealed that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 4.88 million UK premises (up from 4.2m last quarter), which includes 2.156m on FTTP (up from 1.81m) and 2.725m on G.fast (up from 2.42m). But the Gov’s Huawei decision will cost £500m!

The UK FibreNation project, which is currently being acquired by Cityfibre from TalkTalk for £200m (here), has today announced that they’ve started to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to 50,000 premises across the town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

An annual survey conducted by Expert Reviews has named UK ISP Plusnet as the “Overall Winner” of their 2020 Best Broadband Awards, although EE (BT) also picked up an award for “Best Customer Service” and Virgin Media came top for “Best Speed.” Sadly TalkTalk came bottom of the customer service table.

The days of keeping your broadband router at the end of a contract are over, at least for some. BT has joined a few other ISPs in changing their terms so that customers will now be charged a fee if they wish to keep their router – or YouView TV box – at the end of a contract (unless you stay with the provider or return it).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has criticised BT’s “dubious, unsubstantiated advertising” of their “full fibre” broadband products in the city of Bristol, which via several large billboard promotions warned locals not to “settle for Virgin” and to instead get “more reliable speeds than Virgin M200 and M350” from their FTTP.
