Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has today made the surprise announcement that their long-running Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with BT (EE) will be coming to an end. Instead they’ve signed a new 5-year partnership deal for Virgin Mobile with rival operator Vodafone.

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset project has opened a public consultation on their recent Open Market Review (OMR), which examined the current and future level of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage in the two counties and set out a proposed intervention area, ahead of seeking suppliers for a new contract.

The state-owned ISP JT (Jersey Telecom), which has deployed a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover the English Channel Island of Jersey, has won the “The Best Network Transformation Award” for their roll-out as part of the World Communication Awards 2019 event.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has revealed the impact that the 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament has had on their mobile broadband (mostly 4G) network traffic, which for example delivered a 20% surge in data usage during the England v New Zealand semi-final on 26th September. Games involving Wales also created an increase.

Openreach has launched a new localised marketing promotion for UK ISPs, which offers discounts on the monthly rental and one-off connection costs of their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in a maximum of four conurbations (i.e. Fibre First cities with a limited footprint from 10,000 and up to 500,000 premises).

UK ISP Pulse8 Broadband has today announced that, for the second time this year, they’ve been able to drop the monthly prices of their unlimited home “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) packages, which applies to both new and existing customers (these also only attach a short 1 month contract term).

Ofcom has today opened a new consultation on the funding (compensation) arrangements for BT and KCOM’s forthcoming Universal Service Obligation (USO), which is due to begin on the 20th March 2020 and aims to ensure that everybody can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

Business broadband ISP Glide has revealed that they’ve so far issued 1,100 vouchers under the UK Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which they claim has helped to save local businesses an estimated £2,750,000 in getting a new connection installed and increasing their access speeds ninefold.

Some 1,274 homes and businesses across the remote rural Gloucestershire villages of Highnam, Maisemore, Tibberton and Upleadon (i.e. the Forest of Dean district) can now access a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband connection after UK ISP Gigaclear completed their rollout in the communities.

RootMetrics has today published their second report into the tentative initial availability and mobile broadband performance of 5G Mobile networks, albeit this time focused upon the city of Cardiff in Wales. Overall EE UK came top for both average download speeds (163.1Mbps) and network availability (43.4%).

The City of Edinburgh Council and Cityfibre have today reached a new wayleave (access) agreement, which means that the operator’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network will be extended to include around 19,000 social housing properties. The service is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone.

Not that they were ever poorly priced before but the London-focused “full fibre” broadband ISP Community Fibre has today announced a big refresh of their package line-up, which among other things introduces several new plans and at prices that beat most of their competitors.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that they’ve completed the deployment of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” network to 2,000 extra premises in the town of Shildon (Durham, England) and 600 premises in Templepatrick (N.Ireland), which can now access download speeds of 516Mbps (soon 1Gbps).

Rochdale-based broadband ISP and communications provider Zen Internet (since 1995) looks set to begin the next phase of their network expansion, which should help them to reach 80% of the UK. This reportedly comes after NatWest extended a £20m revolving credit facility to help fund the effort.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband and Sky TV (Comcast) will be pleased to learn that the internet and media giant intends to create 1,000 new jobs in the United Kingdom, which includes 500 engineers. The rest will be used to boost customer support staff via a new call centre in Leeds.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) has announced that UK ISP Airband and network operator Openreach (BT) have won several new contracts – supported by a funding boost of £6.3m from DEFRA – to help rollout “ultrafast broadband” (mostly FTTP) across more homes and businesses in the county.

UK ISP Exascale, which recently started deploying a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network to homes and businesses Telford (Shropshire), also appear to be preparing to conduct a similar rollout around “out of town” locations in Wolverhampton (West Midlands) and Cheltenham (Gloucestershire).
