A few months ago we leaked information on a new 500Mbps package that was being tested by “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP Hyperoptic (here). The good news is that this additional tier is now out of trial and will today be officially launched across their portfolio of packages.

Alternative network UK ISP Pine Media have confirmed that their new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has now covered a total of 11,000 premises in Sheffield and they have big rollout plans for the future, including in rural parts of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The long standing CEO of low cost broadband ISP Plusnet, Andy Baker, has announced that he will step down as the provider completes its integration into BT’s Consumer division. Despite this the business will retain some independence (i.e. helping to differentiate their packages) and will continue to be based out of Sheffield and Leeds.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today moved to mix the on-going rollout of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Gigafast Broadband” network with Cityfibre by striking a new commercial deal with Openreach (BT), which gives them access to the latter’s “full fibre” network too.

Sky (Sky Broadband) and the BBC have signed a new content and technology partnership, which among other things will today finally see the BBC’s iPlayer (IPTV) video on demand app and connected red-button service launch on their Sky Q TV platform. Previously it was possible on Sky to get BBC VoD content but not via iPlayer.

The latest independently modelled data has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) style broadband ISP networks – usually capable of “gigabit” (1000Mbps+) speeds – can now reach 10.01% of premises across the United Kingdom, which is up sharply from 5.47% at the very end of last year and from 8.13% at the end of June 2019.

Canadian company Kepler Communications has successfully deployed two tiny Nano Satellites’ – no bigger than a breadbox in your kitchen – to help deliver low latency “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) speeds to the polar (Arctic) regions from Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The spacecraft are now being used by maritime vessels and researchers.

New and existing customers of UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), specifically their standard Home::1 based fixed line broadband packages (sold via ADSL, FTTC, G.fast and FTTP), may be pleased to know that their monthly usage allowances will be boosted from 200GB (GigaBytes) to 300GB from December 2019.

Customers of UK ISP BT (EE) can from today adopt the provider’s new converged “Halo” and “No Limits” plans, which aims to seamlessly bring together both their 5G mobile and fixed line home broadband (FTTC, FTTP, G.fast) networks. Existing 5G customers with BT Plus plans will be automatically upgraded to benefit from Halo.

The ITS Technology Group, which builds and operates a number of “full fibre” and hybrid wireless broadband ISP networks across parts of the United Kingdom, has extended its “gigabit” capable broadband and Ethernet services to businesses on the Fylde Coast by harnessing the local Cooperative Network Infrastructure (CNI).

UK ISP County Broadband, which is being fuelled by £46m from Aviva to help it deploy a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the rural East of England region, has seen its local workforce soar from 16 to 60 since the start of 2019 and they expect to hit 79 before the year is out.

Mobile operator O2 UK appears to have scrapped their Classic Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) plans for new customers in favour of a refreshed range of Big Bundles, which include unlimited calls and texts as standard; these require you to top-up every month in order to get the allowance.

Full fibre provider Community Fibre, which is aiming to cover more than 500,000 premises with their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2022, appears to have signed its first known ISP partner – Glemnet – in the UK capital city to help serve local businesses (B2B).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has posted their latest Q3 2019 results, which reveals that their “gigabit capable” internet and TV network covered another 119,000 premises in the quarter (total of 1.9 million added since 2015) and their total broadband base now stands at 5,269,100 (up by +2.4K in Q3 vs +7.1K in Q2).

Fibre optic ISP Jurassic Fibre has today announced that they’ve begun construction of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Devon UK, which will initially aim to cover various rural communities between Exeter airport and along the A376 corridor to Exmouth.

The UK broadband, media and communications regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that their Group Director of Competition, Jonathan Oxley, will be appointed as an “interim” CEO while the longer than expected hunt continues to find a replacement for outgoing boss Sharon White, who leaves at the end of this month.
