It’s not 4G, it’s still 3G. The current generation of 4G (LTE) based superfast Mobile Broadband technology, which is presently being rolled out by operators in the United Kingdom, is technically still a 3G service because its internet speeds are too slow for it to be considered true 4G by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Hotspot operator The Cloud (BSkyB) has estimated that more than 10 million British adults (around 22% of the entire nation) are logging on to one of their various public wireless internet access points every week and 2.8 million (6%) connect every day.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national broadband and phone network in the United Kingdom, has published “substantial price reductions” of up to 50% for its 100Mbps to 10Gbps capable Ethernet and Leased Line services to business customers, ISPs and mobile operators.

The latest summary of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data for March 2013 from Broadband.co.uk has found that the average download speed in the United Kingdom reached 18.831Mbps (up from 16.514Mbps in Feb 2013) and the average upload speed stood at 2.945Mbps (up from 2.704Mbps).

The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has rejected a new framework proposal that could have helped smaller internet providers (altnets) to challenge BT and secure a slice of public funding in order to rollout new rural superfast broadband networks.

Several major ISPs have announced plans to remove all of their street cabinets from roads and pathways across the United Kingdom. The move, which will result in a significant loss of both internet and phone services to millions of people, will see the operators replace each of the cabinets with a complimentary bunch flowers and a message saying “So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish”.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national telecoms network in the United Kingdom, has today confirmed the final pricing and launch date for its premium “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) capable FTTP-on-Demand (FTTPoD) based fibre optic broadband service (this will be available to all FTTC supporting lines).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, confirms that the European Commission (EC) “did not raise any concerns” about its plans to slash the price that ISPs, mobile operators and businesses must pay to BT for 1Gbps+ wholesale Leased Line (Ethernet) services in all parts of the UK except Hull and London.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has today issued a new rollout update that confirms how its 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network is now available to 50% of the UK population and the service has also gone live in a total of 50 towns and cities.

A new study from uSwitch, which is based on data from 900,000 anecdotal internet speed tests (conducted between December 1st 2012 and February 28th 2013), has revealed a huge difference of up to 89% in broadband ISP speeds between postcode districts within each of the 30 biggest UK “post” towns.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK), which still misleadingly insists upon calling its existing 3G based Mobile Broadband network “ultrafast” (fixed line ISPs tend to associate this with speeds of at least 100Mbps), has confirmed that it’s future 4G (LTE) product will be last to market when it arrives in Q4-2013.

It’s back on. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London (England) has finally resolved last year’s dispute over street cabinet placement with BT (here), which saw the operator withdraw from plans to make superfast broadband (FTTC) ISP services available to 34,200 premises in the area.

The Shropshire County Council (SCC) and BT have today signed a new £24.6 million deal that will make superfast broadband speeds of up to 80Mbps (FTTC/P) available to 93% of local homes and businesses (helping 130,000 premises) by the end of Spring 2016 (excludes the Telford & Wrekin Council area).

The rural Northumberland (England, UK) town of Rothbury, which is home to around 2,000 people, looks set to benefit from a new super-fast broadband ISP network after the county council, BT and GreySky Consulting signed a new deal that will use £460,000 of funding from DEFRA’s £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund.
