The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which claims to be a representative voice of the UK music business, has officially called on the country’s biggest broadband providers to unblock the “newly reinvented” PromoBay.org website as it no longer appears to be engaging in internet piracy (copyright infringement).

The UK government’s Chancellor, George Osborne MP, has today announced his Autumn Statement and revealed the final list of 12 “smaller cities” that will benefit from around £50m (Urban Broadband Fund) to help expand the coverage of “ultra-fast” broadband (80-100Mbps+) and “high speed” public wifi services into neglected areas.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” leaflet and website promotion for JT’s (Jersey / Guernsey Telecom) new MyMobile plans, which both falsely claimed to offer “unlimited” texts and Mobile Broadband data. Separately Virgin Media failed in its effort to get a TalkTalk advert banned.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has slashed the monthly price of its “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service by a whopping 37%! Installation prices for the operators new On Demand (FTTPoD) solution have also been revealed.

Entanet, which supplies broadband services to a number of UK internet providers, has called on ISPs to put more effort into differentiating themselves by placing a “higher value” on the reliability of a connection instead of just price and service speed; especially for business services.

CityFibre, which builds fibre optic infrastructure for cities in the United Kingdom, has announced that its “open access” and city-wide Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) style ultrafast broadband network in York will be extended to serve local businesses from early next year (Q1-2013). Residential homes to follow.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has today published a new map of superfast broadband take-up in the United Kingdom, which predictably reveals that adoption of superfast services appears to be strongest in areas where it has been “available for some time” (e.g. Northern Ireland, which is said to have “encouraging” adoption rates).

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest study of customer service satisfaction among the biggest telecoms operators and revealed that Sky Broadband (BSkyB) comes top for both its fixed line broadband, TV and phone services, while O2 was rated the best for mobile providers.

GEO Networks, a dedicated fibre optic solutions provider, has today announced the completion of a new 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable “optical fibre ring” (East-West Ring) between the United Kingdom and Ireland, which also makes use of the FibreSpeed network in North Wales.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has officially launched the registration process for next year’s 2013 ISP Awards, which will also mark the groups 15th anniversary. This year’s event will include two new categories for Best Superfast Broadband and Best Fixed Wireless Broadband.

Several of the country’s biggest broadband providers including BT, BE Broadband (O2), Virgin Media and others have been accused of blocking access to an allegedly legitimate website (PromoBay) as part of their wider court ordered crackdown on internet piracy site The Pirate Bay. But is it a case of mistaken identity or just a crafty TBP campaign.

The latest monthly summary of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data, which covers the November 2012 period, reveals that the average download speed in the United Kingdom has fallen from 18.038Mbps (Megabits per second) last month to 17.054Mbps now. Meanwhile the average upload speed has remained largely unchanged at 2.13Mbps.

Cable operator Virgin Media has written to the UK government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, with a series of recommendations for changing the £150m+ Urban Broadband Fund. The UBF aims to support the roll-out of “ultrafast” broadband services and fast public wifi, although Virgin and BT have already threatened it with legal action.

BTOpenreach engineers have been dispatched after BT declared that a Major Service Outage (MSO) had this morning struck its 21CN based broadband ISP services across the south of England, London and Birmingham areas, which has caused customers of multiple providers to lose connectivity.
