Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has this morning announced that its new 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based superfast Mobile Broadband network will be expanded to cover a further 17 new cities in the United Kingdom by March 2013.

Thousands of internet users have been knocked offline this morning after BT’s 20CN and 21CN broadband network in Scotland, Northern Ireland and some of North West England was hit by an unspecified fault at one of the operators “metro nodes” in Scotland. Multiple UK ISPs are being affected.

Ofcom has released its annual 2012 International Communications Market Report (ICMR), which looks at the adoption, coverage and the uptake of broadband, phone, mobile, TV and radio services across 17 major countries. The report found that the UK was one of the cheapest markets and our superfast broadband (30Mbps+) availability compares favourably.

Cable operator Virgin Media has this morning confirmed that its FREE public wireless internet (wifi) service is now available from a further 20 London underground tube stations, which brings the total coverage to 92 stations and an additional 28 stations are due to come online in early 2013.

The Joint Committee responsible for conducting pre-legislative scrutiny of the UK government’s Draft Communications Data Bill, which threatens to expand internet snooping laws by forcing ISPs into logging a bigger and more accessible slice of your online activity, has today described the proposed new laws as “overkill” and called for it to be “significantly amended“.

The 6UK campaign, a not-for-profit membership organisation that was setup with support from Vinton Gray “Vint” Cerf (i.e. father of the internet) and others to help encourage UK ISP uptake of the IPv6 internet addressing standard, has announced that it is “powerless to encourage adoption” without more government support and will thus have to close.

This week the UK government awarded £50m to help twelve “smaller cities” expand the coverage of “ultra-fast” broadband (80-100Mbps+) and “high speed” public wifi services into neglected areas. But some of the cities, such as Derry in Northern Ireland and Portsmouth in England, already have near perfect availability of “superfast” connectivity.

UK ISP Gigaclear has today confirmed that the two Oxfordshire villages of Fyfield and Tubney (England) can expect to receive ultra-fast broadband speeds of up to 1Gpbs (Gigabits per second) via a new fibre optic (FTTP) network from early 2013.

The UK government’s Chancellor, George Osborne MP, has today announced his Autumn Statement and revealed the final list of 12 “smaller cities” that will benefit from around £50m (Urban Broadband Fund) to help expand the coverage of “ultra-fast” broadband (80-100Mbps+) and “high speed” public wifi services into neglected areas.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” leaflet and website promotion for JT’s (Jersey / Guernsey Telecom) new MyMobile plans, which both falsely claimed to offer “unlimited” texts and Mobile Broadband data. Separately Virgin Media failed in its effort to get a TalkTalk advert banned.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has slashed the monthly price of its “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service by a whopping 37%! Installation prices for the operators new On Demand (FTTPoD) solution have also been revealed.

Entanet, which supplies broadband services to a number of UK internet providers, has called on ISPs to put more effort into differentiating themselves by placing a “higher value” on the reliability of a connection instead of just price and service speed; especially for business services.

CityFibre, which builds fibre optic infrastructure for cities in the United Kingdom, has announced that its “open access” and city-wide Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) style ultrafast broadband network in York will be extended to serve local businesses from early next year (Q1-2013). Residential homes to follow.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has today published a new map of superfast broadband take-up in the United Kingdom, which predictably reveals that adoption of superfast services appears to be strongest in areas where it has been “available for some time” (e.g. Northern Ireland, which is said to have “encouraging” adoption rates).
