Connect Fibre Router 2023

Alternative network operator and UK ISP Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets), which aspires to cover 100,000 premises across the East of England with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has launched a new 150Mbps (symmetric) option on their social tariff to help complement the existing 50Mbps plan.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has today published their first biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for January 2024, which reveals that three telecoms providers made it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations, including Tesco Mobile (5th), Giffgaff (23rd) and Sky Mobile (42nd). The odd broadband ISP also gets a nod.

Broadband ISP, TV and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today announced that they intend to create around 200 new graduate, intern and apprenticeship roles across the UK in 2024 (starting salaries go up to £35,000 per year), which is down from the c.350 they pledged to create during 2023.

Network builder and UK ISP Pine Media, which has been steadily deploying their own gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband infrastructure across parts of South Yorkshire, Kent and rural Derbyshire, has informed ISPreview that part of their network in Sheffield was recently hit by what appears to be a targeted attack.

BT’s Chief Security and Networks Officer, Howard Watson, has written a new blog post that contrasts their delivery progress on the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project (i.e. extending 4G mobile coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025) with the slower pace at Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2).

British mobile operator Vodafone claims to have conducted the “first European test” of “advanced 5G uplink technology” by harnessing the latest Qualcomm processors and Xiaomi smartphone via their 5G Standalone (5GSA) network, which enabled them to achieve faster mobile broadband upload speeds of “up to” 273Mbps.

Welsh broadband ISP Ogi, which is busy building a multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network for homes and businesses across parts of South Wales, has today revealed that they’ve made a number of improvements to their customer care provision (e.g. more support staff and longer opening times).

UK ISP Shell Energy, which is in the process of being acquired from the Octopus Energy Group by TalkTalk (here), will today announce annual price increases across their broadband and phone plans (including add-ons and call charges). The changes will impact both new customers and existing customers who are agreeing to a new contract.

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.6% (22.39 million) in Q3 2023 to total 1.42 billion connections, which compares with 1.87% (24.59m) in the same quarter last year. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK almost stalled in the latest quarter.

Yesterday the First Minister of the Scottish Government, Humza Yousaf, revealed that the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) broadband upgrade project with Openreach (BT) “remains on track to complete build … by 2028” and had so far covered “more than 36,100 premises“. But in October 2023 the figure was stated as 42,000, so which is correct?

Finnish network firm Nokia and the Zayo Group, which runs a large global metro and long-haul fibre optic network, today claims to have set a new North American distance record for fibre optic data transmission on a live network by using a single wavelength to reach speeds of 1 Terabits per second (1Tbps) over a distance of 1004km.

A new 1.2Gbps tier has also launched.
