Last week we saw mobile operator Three UK introduce free video streaming (i.e. it won’t eat into your Mobile Broadband data allowance) on their 4G Mobile plans (here) and this week Virgin Media have joined the fun by adding data-free use of Twitter to their own plans. But what of Net Neutrality?

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has today announced another change at the top as the operator’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Iain Torrens, steps down. Iain will be replaced by Kate Ferry, who is currently the Group Strategic Corporate Affairs Director at Dixons Carphone.

A further 14,000+ premises in the county of Shropshire (England) look set to gain access to a “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connection over the next 3 years after the local authority selected fixed wireless ISP Airband to deliver the extra coverage under a new £11.2m contract.

The B4RN inspired Fibre for Rural Nottinghamshire (F4RN) project, which is rolling out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to houses in rural Fiskerton and Morton, has been disrupted by £1,000 worth of damage after several of their cable ducts were cut by vandals.

Contractors working for Virgin Media in Carlisle (Cumbria) have faced criticism over the quality of their work after 400 defects were logged in one year, with the local authority now having to inspect 90% (instead of the “usual” 10%) of their street works and instruct a lot of repairs.

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has awarded £16 million to three Universities (King’s College London and the Universities of Surrey and Bristol) in order to trial and demo the United Kingdom’s first end-to-end 5G Mobile network in 2018.

Finally, there’s a bit of good news for Virgin Media this week. The UK cable broadband and TV operator has today announced that their £3bn Project Lightning network expansion is set to cover an additional 53,000 premises in the county of Lancashire (England).

Customers of several broadband ISPs (particularly those on Sky Broadband, BT and TalkTalk) in the South East of England appear to be suffering from a total loss of internet connectivity or unstable services, which is the result of 7 “separate” breaks in major core fibre optic cables.

Customers on almost all of Three UK’s “Advanced” 4G Mobile plans (i.e. those with a data allowance of 4GB or more) can now benefit from the operator’s new “Go Binge” service, which provides “unlimited data … for streaming video and music” from Netflix, Deezer, Soundcloud and TVPlayer.

A senior researcher at the University College London‘s (UCL) Department of Geography, Oliver O’Brien, has taken data from Ofcom and used it to produce a new map of estimated broadband speeds across the country, which reveals some very familiar Digital Divides between different areas.

Low cost ISP Plusnet has cut the monthly price of their superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) + phone (line rental) packages for new customers and on top of that they’ve also removed the £25 one-off activation fee until the 12th July next week (a 12 month contract term is applicable).
