UK ISP Zen Internet, which is now home to 430 staff, has revealed that their operating profits surged 34% from £760,000 to £1.02m in the year to the end of September 2014 and revenues rose 6.8% from £47.36m (2013) to £50.62m. But there were also a few blips for the accounts department to tackle.

BTOpenreach has told ISPreview.co.uk that the first large-scale residential trial of their future G.fast broadband technology (details), which the telecoms operator expects to sell via the Next Generation Access 2 (NGA2) tag, will begin next month in Huntingdon (Cambridgeshire) and ISPs are now being invited.

As expected BT has today revealed the first solid details and price of their new 4K Ultra HD TV package, which claims to include “Europe’s very first live sports Ultra HD channel” (BTSport Ultra HD) and a new 4K capable 1TB YouView (IPTV) set-top-box. But you’ll need a faster than “superfast” broadband speed.

The Government’s plan to introduce tougher Internet snooping laws has suffered a setback after the High Court ruled that key parts of the temporary Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act (DRIP), which is due to be replaced by the end of 2016 with a more controversial and extensive law, are unlawful.

ISP PlusNet, perhaps keen to put the recent spate of bad publicity behind it, has introduced another discount by offering their ‘Unlimited Fibre Broadband and Calls‘ (up to 38Mbps FTTC) package free for the first 6 months of service (£14.99 a month thereafter). Line rental must also be taken from the equivalent of £12.99 a month pre-paid.

The Superfast Telford project in Shropshire (England) has officially launched today, which follows last year’s signing of a new state aid supported £5.6m contract with BT (here) that aims to extend superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services to reach 98% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2017.

Fibre optic network builder CityFibre has today announced that the first business customers have now gone live on their new 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network in the city of Aberdeen (Aberdeen Core), which has also just completed the first city centre construction phase.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) will shortly start turning their SuperHub broadband routers into public WiFi hotspots so that other customers can access the Internet when nearby (e.g. those passing outside your property), which will mirror the approach that BT similarly takes with their FON enabled HomeHub(s).

A new survey of 683 adults who are decision-makers in SMEs, which was conducted online during June 2015 by Virgin Media Business and YouGov, has found that 37% of smaller businesses don’t know how fast their Internet connection is and 72% don’t even know how much data they use.

The Government is nearly ready to join with Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to kick off a major “multi-media education campaign“, which will encourage Internet users to “do the right thing” and use legal services instead of piracy. Warning letters (email alerts) will also be sent to some broadband subscribers.

UK ISP TalkTalk has announced that their Plus TV bundle of unlimited broadband, phone (anytime calls), premium TV (YouView) and a free mobile SIM, which is priced at £10 per month and comes with a £75 Love2shop voucher, now also includes 6 months of free HD access to video streaming service Netflix (until 30th July).

BT has reduced the standard cost of their Unlimited BTInfinity 1 (up to 38Mbps FTTC) + Weekend Calls bundle to £10 per month and it will remain on offer at this price until 28th July. Plus new BTMobile customers are also being offered an extra £10 iTunes or £10 Amazon Voucher.

The GLA Conservatives, which represent the Conservative members on the London Assembly, have today used data from Ofcom to claim that 341,592 residents in inner London are without modern “high-speed Internet access” and the city is one of the “worst capitals” in Europe for broadband speed – “behind Paris, Bucharest, Dublin and Kiev“.

The Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, has promised to make it “absolutely clear” where superfast broadband will be delivered during the coming autumn and he will publish a firm plan for reaching the final 5% “before the end of the year“. But he also asked colleagues to stop their “long whinge” against the project.

A new report claims that around 7 out of 10 Sky Broadband customers have enabled the ISPs network-level filtering (Parental Controls), which was enforcedly introduced last year by all of the largest broadband ISPs to help block “adult content” from young eyes. Sadly it doesn’t always work as intended.

A new AeroMobile and OnePoll survey of 4,250 adults in the UK, Germany and UAE between 25th March and 7th April 2015 has shed new light on how much people use their mobile phone while abroad versus when at home, which is despite the often significantly higher roaming charges that can be incurred.
