Amazon-Project-Kuiper-Rockets

Mobile operator Vodafone and Vodacom have today announced that they’ve agreed a “strategic collaboration” deal to harness Amazon’s future Project Kuiper constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband satellites, which will be used to help extend the reach of their 4G and 5G networks across Europe and Africa.

The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has published their annual Digging Up Britain 2023 report and revealed that telecoms remained the most active industry when it comes to searching before digging.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has today moved out of the pilot phase for its new 4G and 5G capable Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) technology and begun their “volume deployment“, which aims to reach 2,500 sites across mostly rural parts of Wales and the South-West of England by 2027.

Customers of Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), specifically those who are currently facing airport delays of 60 minutes or more at over 500 airports around the world – something that has been in the news quite a lot this week, are being offered free access via up to four passes to 1,200 airport lounges.

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband and mobile network performance testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that 5G based mobile broadband download speeds have fallen across most regions of the UK over the past year. But despite this, overall data speeds (4G + 5G) have increased.

Mobile operator Talkmobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on parent Vodafone’s national UK 4G and 5G network, has finally launched their first plan offering “unlimited data” and at launch it’ll set you back just £16 per month (similar to SMARTY’s plan on Three UK’s network).

Telecoms giant BT (EE) and network supplier Nokia claim to have pushed mobile broadband upload speeds to over 230Mbps on a new trial network, which operated by harnessing the uplink aggregation of two carrier components in live spectrum for a 5G Standalone (SA) network.

A series of complaints, most of which came from rivals Three UK and Vodafone, has prompted the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to investigate and ban several old adverts for EE’s mobile network over “misleading” promotions, which claimed that it was the “No.1” network for 5G.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK and network supplier Ericsson have today announced that they’ve concluded a successful trial of cloud-based video gaming on their new 5G Standalone (SA) network, which delivered big improvements in gaming performance via mobile broadband (i.e. download / uploads speeds, latency and jitter).

A new trial has just been conducted by UK telecoms giant BT (EE) and supplier Ericsson, which is claimed to be somewhat of a “European first” after it successfully demonstrated the transmission of Standalone 5G services in a wideband Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) radio carrier (over 20MHz) within a sub-3GHz spectrum band.

Mobile operator Sky Mobile, which harnesses O2’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform, appears to have become one of the first UK mobile providers to add Apple MacBook laptops to its range of devices with a bundled SIM, starting from just £22 a month for an Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch M1 (2020).

Customers of mobile operator O2 (VMO2) in the rural Norfolk (England) village of Horning have complained of signal problems after one of the operator’s key mobile masts in the area was disconnected, which was done in order to avoid it causing interference with a new Ministry of Defence (MoD) radar dome.

Mobile operator Three UK has this morning announced that they’ve so far built 100 new cell sites as part of the £1 billion Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. The new sites are currently providing 4G connectivity (mobile broadband etc.) to over 37,000 rural premises across the country – spanning 2,800 square kilometres.

Mobile operator Three UK has today reported their latest results to 30th June 2023, which among other things reveals that their 5G based mobile broadband network is now live across more than 4,400 sites (up from 4,250 at the end of 2022) in over 610 towns and cities – achieving 61% outdoor population coverage (up from just 60%).

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has opened a new £40 million fund to help local and regional authorities to test and adopt 5G and other advanced wireless network technologies, which could be used to “pioneer digital connectivity for residents and business“.
