A joint £2.4m UK project with South Korea looks set to trial how ultrafast 5G wireless data connections could be used to support “uninterrupted infotainment services” (i.e. travel services, entertainment and advertising) for commuters travelling around the Glasgow Metro, as well as possibly the London Underground.

The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS) has launched a new inquiry into UK 5G and fixed broadband telecommunications infrastructure, which in the wake of all the alleged risks from Huawei’s kit will examine the issues of sustaining access to “safe” telecoms technology as a national security issue.

Wireless UK ISP Quickline has announced that their part of the £2.1m Government funded 5G Rural Integrated Testbed (5GRIT) pilot is due to start testing its new network later this month, which will initially aim to bring superfast broadband to holidaymakers across caravan parks in Ingoldmells (Lincolnshire), including Butlins.

Crowd-sourced analyst firm OpenSignal has today published the first results from their initial real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 8 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service). The highest maximum speeds were seen by 5G users in the USA (1815Mbps), while the UK scored the lowest (569Mbps).

ISP Vodafone has today gone live in 7 UK cities with their new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network. At the same time they’ve moved to challenge Three UK by introducing a new range of SIM-only and handset plans with “unlimited data” (also on 4G services). A new home broadband (FTTC) and mobile bundle is coming too.

In an unsurprising development BT has announced that they will launch their own 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband service this autumn, which will initially be made available to subscribers of their premium “Plus” packages. As you’d expect this is due to be based off EE’s national UK network.

Homes connecting to a supposedly 1Gbps wireless broadband trial in the tiny rural Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llanddewi Rhydderch, which is supported by the UK Government, have yet to experience “anything near” to those speeds. A recent council meeting also suggests that the service becomes “patchy when the weather is poor.”

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today revealed further details about their new 5GEE WiFi plans and advanced HTC 5G Hub (Mobile Smart Hub) wireless router, which will deliver ultrafast mobile broadband speeds to consumers across parts of the United Kingdom. But it’s a bit pricey for what you get.

Mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that the Isles of Scilly, which sits 45km off the south coast of Cornwall, will join Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London as being one of the first UK places to benefit from their commercial rollout of 5G mobile broadband technology on 3rd July 2019.

Mobile operator Three UK has confirmed that they’ve begun trials of a new 5G based “home broadband” service in Camden and Wandsworth (London). On top of that they’re also upgrading their 4G kit in Croydon (i.e. upgrading sites to new antennas and reallocating 10MHz of 3G spectrum (leaving 5MHz for 3G) to 4G for better performance).

17th June, 2019 (12 Comments)

The UK telecoms regulator has controversially proposed that it may reserve 390MHz of spectrum in the 3.8-4.2GHz bands, which could be sold to “thousands” of new entrants in order to help them build 5G based mobile broadband networks for local coverage or industrial use (i.e. each license may cover just 50 square metres).

The UK Government has today committed a further £40m from their 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) programme to support another round of projects, which will help to show how the ultrafast mobile broadband tech could support work in the “logistics and manufacturing sectors.” They also want to simplify the planning process to help rollouts.

11th June, 2019 (1 Comment)

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has proposed to defragment (no.. not their computer hard disks) the 3.4-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands after next year’s auction, which could enable mobile network operators to get the best performance and save money on their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband networks.

Vodafone has quietly become the first UK provider to confirm that it will be “switching off 3G” services within the “next two to three years,” although we fully expect that EE, O2 and Three UK will eventually do something similar as they convert 3G spectrum to 4G or 5G. But 2G voice will remain as a useful low-power fall back.
