The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has, following two complaints by rival Sky Broadband (BSkyB), told cable operator Virgin Media not to “misleadingly” claim that their service was “unlimited” and with “no caps” if they also imposed restrictions (e.g. Traffic Management) that were “more than moderate“.

Internet provider BE Broadband (O2 UK) could face questions from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after a customer on their “unlimited” use package(s) was, without warning, allegedly given just 14 days to find a new provider after the ISP terminated their service due to “excessive” usage.

The results from 846 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly reader poll have found that 89% still feel that big broadband ISPs are continuing to mislead consumers with their advertising practices, especially in regards to promotions of internet service speed and pricing. Time for tougher rules perhaps.

The Advertising Standards Authority UK (ASA) has also banned a TV and press advert for one of BT’s broadband and phone bundles after it misleadingly claimed to be “free for six months” when in fact the line rental was still payable.

The Advertising Standards Authority UK (ASA) has, following a complaint by BT, banned a press and website ad for TalkTalk’s new broadband YouView TV service, which was found to have wrongfully promoted the “FREE” kit as “usually/normally £299” (i.e. retail price of the box).

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld fifteen complainants against BT’s website based broadband availability checker service because it often delivered unreliable “provisional” coverage dates for their UK superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) service and was thus deemed “likely to mislead“.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a “misleading” leaflet and website promotion for JT’s (Jersey / Guernsey Telecom) new MyMobile plans, which both falsely claimed to offer “unlimited” texts and Mobile Broadband data. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today begun enforcing new guidelines that are designed to tackle misleading promotions of Mobile Broadband speed. The changes were first introduced earlier this year for fixed line ISPs (here) but have now also been extended to mobile operators.

This week saw the BBC’s famous consumer affairs TV show, Watchdog, take the ISP to task with a comical twist.
