Network operator Openreach (BT) has tweaked their Proactive FTTP Upgrades process for ISPs, which allows providers to optionally reduce the normal lead time of 6 weeks. Just to be clear, it’s normally consumers that initiate an upgrade, but with proactive upgrades the initiator is your ISP (this can help with copper broadband [ADSL/FTTC/G.fast] to full fibre migrations).

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve kicked off the construction phase for several of their recently awarded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts with the government (BDUK), including in remote rural parts of Lancashire, Wales, Devon, Hertfordshire, Staffordshire and Wiltshire.

Customers of Sky Broadband’s “superfast” (part-fibre) packages (FTTC or SOGEA), specifically those living in areas where Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines now exist from either Openreach or CityFibre’s networks, have started to receive Texts (SMS) and WhatsApp messages inviting them to upgrade to their Full Fibre 100Mbps (18Mbps upload) service “at no extra charge“.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and Neos Networks have today confirmed the completion of their £7.25m “GigaHubs” project, which has now connected 192 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.) to a new 1,500km long gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network.

Internet provider Sky Broadband has today gone fully live via CityFibre’s growing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband network. The change is being launched alongside a new Wi-Fi 7 router – “Gigafast+ Hub” (SCER11BELUKS) – and two new packages – Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ (2.5Gbps) and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ (5Gbps).

Irish network operator Eir is taking BT (Openreach) to the High Court in London over a claim for damages worth £67m, which relates to a long-running dispute over the UK broadband giant’s Northern Ireland Public Sector Shared Network (NIPSSN) contract to provide connectivity services; the same one that attracted a £6.3m fine from Ofcom in 2020.

The current owners of internet provider Yayzi Broadband appear to be in the process of establishing a new provider called nufibre, which is due to launch in about a month and will be offering FTTP broadband packages via a selection of network operators (the website shows logos for Openreach, Trooli, Freedom Fibre, MS3, CityFibre and others).

Strategic consultancy firm Eight Advisory has today published the third edition of their Takeup Tracker, which examines the rise in take-up across the UK’s many alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks (altnets) and compares it with that of Openreach (BT). This edition also takes a deeper dive into take-up by age of network – a key factor in gauging progress.

Hull-based network operator KCOM, which has already deployed their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across a big chunk of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, has today quietly published their first terms and pricing details for a new PIA solution. The product allows rivals to run new fibre via the operator’s existing cable ducts and poles.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today published an updated build plan for the ongoing roll-out of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP network, which is the first update since December 2024 and adds 21 new locations – covering 80,000 extra UK premises – to their national deployment plan.

Eyebrows were recently raised after UK network operator Openreach (BT) quoted one home in Scotland over £73,000 to have an FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) broadband service installed. The high cost of FTTPoD is not a new issue, but in this case a nearby neighbour already had the service and the operator’s fibre even ran directly outside the house.

The Scottish Government (SG) has today revealed that more than 80,000 premises have now benefitted from their £697m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband to remote rural areas. Some 27,000 premises of this have been delivered over the past year, which is up from 20,000 the year before.

Network access provider Openreach announced another change to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services today, which cuts the annual wholesale rental of their premium small business focused 1Gbps (220Mbps upload) tier from £1,173.36 to £900 excluding VAT (inc. FTTPoD). The change will be effective from 1st August 2025.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has published a new Suppliers Information Note (SIN) for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP lines, which provides an updated summary of all their old, existing and future Optical Network Terminal (ONT) modems that they’ve deployed or intent to deploy. Two new suppliers – Zyxel and Sercomm – are also mentioned.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has informed providers of high-speed Ethernet connections that, effective from 1st October 2025, the one-off Fixed Fee for Excess Construction Charges (ECC) on new Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) lines will increase from £638 to £708 excluding VAT (an increase of 10.97%). But in reality, customers won’t pay any extra.
