The Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), an industry think-tank, has today announced that the UK’s largest mobile and broadband providers, including BT, Three UK, and Sky Broadband, among many others, have agreed to work together to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the telecoms supply chain.

An unspecified number of homes and businesses in the Worcestershire (England) town of Malvern have been hit by major disruption to their broadband ISP and phone connectivity, which has lasted for several days, after five of Openreach’s local cables were damaged. This has required extensive engineering work to fully repair.

Business focused UK ISP Cerberus Networks has recently become the latest provider to increase the pricing of their broadband packages, which has seen a number of their more consumer grade and Openreach based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) tiers going up in price by around £3-£4 per month.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has issued a progress update on their £210m investment (up from £180m in January 2023) to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across Wales, which reveals that they’ve now covered over 700,000 premises (up from 600k).

A new report from investment bank Numis, which was authored by analyst John Karidis, has today reiterated its sell recommendation on BT (inc. Openreach) and warned that the national broadband giant “keeps underplaying the risk” from rival alternative networks to its consumer and business units.

The latest biannual summary of UK fixed broadband coverage for H1 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have surged to reach 52.77% of premises (up from 45.13% in H2 2022) and 76.22% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 72.66%). The Cambridgeshire Constabulary has appealed for information after they revealed that Openreach’s UK broadband and phone network in the county had been attacked eight times since May 2023 by criminal gangs, which typically target the theft of underground copper cables and often cause significant service outages.

Broadband ISPs that were planning to launch faster packages based off Openreach’s future Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) tiers, which push top download speeds to 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps (both offer 120Mbps upstream), may have to wait a little bit longer as the operator has extended their pilot test for another 3 months.

Ofcom has published their annual 2023 monitoring report into Openreach’s independence from BT, which found that the commitments made by the operator “have generally proved to be successful“. But the regulator warns against complacency and cautions BT’s CEO, Philip Jansen, against repeating some of his recent remarks.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today opened an investigation into the Quality of Service (i.e. minimum standards for repairs and new line provision) targets that they impose upon some of Openreach’s (BT) broadband and Ethernet products, which comes after the regulator found that the operator had fallen short in several areas.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has published a new industry consultation that sets out, in more detail, how they’re proposing to close the first 103 of their “priority exchanges” by 2030 (pilot phase). But eventually the plan is to shut 4,500 exchanges across the UK, which will impact various broadband, PIA and Ethernet services.

Budget broadband provider Plusnet has today discounted the prices on their ultrafast and gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered packages again for new residential customers covered by Openreach’s national network, which will be available to order until 7th July 2023.

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme in England has today issued a progress update on their £6m Fibre Extension Programme (FEP) contract with Openreach (BT), which was originally due to cover 2,000 rural premises with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband by the end of 2021.

The latest H2 2022 study into the broadband coverage of UK new build homes reveals that 98.3% of houses constructed by the end of 2022 were covered by a fixed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (unchanged from H1 2022), which falls slightly to 98.1% when only looking at the latest early data for 2023.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today, as previously leaked (here), announced the soft launch of the UK’s first 1.6Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package on Openreach’s network and the supporting introduction of a new Wi-Fi 6 capable Smart Hub Plus (Smart Hub 3) router and other kit.

Openreach has notified UK ISPs of an upcoming trial on their hybrid-fibre G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) products (including SOGFAST), which looks as if it will attempt to improve line performance by establishing the “most effective” Dynamic Line Management (DLM) thresholds.

Network access provider Openreach has declined to elaborate on a recently revealed proposal from their CEO, Clive Selley, which confirmed that the UK broadband giant was “exploring whether it’s practical” to deploy public EV chargers next to some of their 90,000 or so FTTC (VDSL2) street cabinets.
