BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that it has no general plans to disguise street cabinets. The confirmation follows an earlier suggestion by the government’s culture spokesman, Viscount Younger, that “plans [were] afoot to camouflage” the big green FTTC boxes.

BTOpenreach has announced yet another plan to recruit up to 250 new telecoms engineers from “Armed Forces leavers” (i.e. those due to leave within the next year). The ex-Military personnel will be used to help support the UK operators £2.5bn national roll out of superfast broadband (FTTC etc.) services.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s UK telecoms network, appears to be making good progress with its first Fibre-Only Exchange (FOX) trial in the rural civil parish village of Deddington (Oxfordshire). The project aims to replace the old copper line products with ultra-fast fibre optic phone and broadband (e.g. 100Mbps+ FTTP) services.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has this week introduced a new Disputed No Access process for all ISPs. This is designed to “repair appointments” where engineers have reported that they arrived at a home but were then unable to gain access, an account that customers sometimes dispute.

It’s well known that BTOpenreach engineers sometimes have difficulty finding the UK homes and businesses of their intended customers, yet some targets are quite hard to miss, such as London’s National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. But miss it they did.

The next generation of BT’s Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband technology, which will make use of the ITU-T’s new VDSL2 G.vector (G.993.5) specification, has completed its first interoperability testing and could soon be bringing affordable speeds of close to 200Mbps into UK homes.

BT’s national UK telecoms and retail ISP network has been hit by a double whammy of problems. A suspected cable theft is currently causing service outages across parts of the country, while a peering problem has hindered access to some website and triggered higher than normal levels of packet loss.

9th October, 2012 (11 Comments)

Canadian firm Genesis Technical Systems (GTS) has today announced the official launch of its patented DSLRings technology, which could deliver superfast broadband speeds of up to 400Mbps (Megabits per second) into UK homes that reside further away from their BT street cabinet than FTTC can currently reach.

It might surprise some people to learn that BT’s £2.5bn roll out of superfast broadband services (FTTC/P), which ultimately aims to cover 66% of the UK by the end of 2014, has managed to overlook several large areas in some of the country’s biggest towns.

4th October, 2012 (10 Comments)

BTOpenreach has announced a new short term process change for ISP customers, which is designed to help cope with the on-going engineer delays (caused by bad weather). The new initiative aims to give certain business customers a faster provision of service (phone and broadband) but only if it’s absolutely necessary.

2nd October, 2012 (3 Comments)

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has announced that ISPs offering its up to 80Mbps capable superfast broadband (FTTC) service will from next year be able to discount the connection fee to £30 +vat (normally £80) for a period of 6 months.

1st October, 2012 (36 Comments)

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms network, has warned customers to expect yet more engineer delays with their broadband and phone services after a week of high winds and heavy flooding exasperated the existing problem and forced them to focus even more effort upon repairs.

BTOpenreach has informed mobile operators of its intention to develop a new mobile infill solution that could potentially leverage BT’s existing fixed line network to provide mobile services into parts of the UK that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage. But could it also help fixed line broadband performance?

25th September, 2012 (124 Comments)

BTOpenreach, which manages the access and development of BT’s national UK telecoms network, has today published the next batch of 163 telephone exchanges for its £2.5bn roll out of 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) and 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based superfast broadband ISP technology.

21st September, 2012 (4 Comments)

Ofcom has approved BTOpenreach’s request to extend a connection price discount for its superfast broadband (FTTC) lines by two months, which cut the one-off cost from £80 to just £30 +vat when taken alongside a new phone line (WLR or MPF). Sadly only ISP customers in certain parts of England (UK) will benefit.

10th September, 2012 (3 Comments)

The Local Government Association (LGA), which claims to be the national voice of councils across the United Kingdom, has warned that last week’s newly proposed measures to boost the roll-out of superfast broadband services by relaxing planning rules will result in a “significant erosion of people’s ability to influence their local environment“.

8th September, 2012 (34 Comments)

BTOpenreach has apologised after some of its engineers were left unable to perform the Home Wiring Solution as part of their superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) installations because ISPs had incorrectly assumed that they no longer needed to give specific authorisation for it.
