The Welsh Government (WG) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they recently extended their multi-million pound Public Sector Broadband Aggregation (PSBA) network contract with BT’s Enterprise division, which has been operational since 2007 and was awarded to the incumbent in 2014 (here).

Scotland-based UK business ISP Commsworld, under direction from consultancy firm CGI, have recently finished laying 20km of fibre optic cabling to overhaul and upgrade their Borders infrastructure, resiliency and capacity to help connect all of the region’s nine secondary schools to gigabit speed broadband.

The UK Government (Building Digital UK) has this evening announced the completion of the “largest public sector broadband project” in Wales, which has enabled 620 public sector sites (hospitals, police stations, libraries etc.) to get access to a lightning-fast full fibre network connection.

Business focused UK ISP and Managed Service Provider Connectus has announced that their gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network is being extended to cover three additional business parks in the North of England, including the Waterside Business Park in St Helens, Canal Side and Chowley Oak in Chester.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise in Scotland has announced the completion of a joint £7.7m state aid funded project to build a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to connect 154 public sector sites (schools, NHS, council etc.) across Inverness, Fort William, Thurso and Wick. But it’s also fostering FTTP.

Some 154 rural public sector sites, as well as 650 homes and businesses, across the Angus, Perth & Kinross areas of Scotland are able to benefit from gigabit-capable broadband speeds after BT (Openreach) “completed” infrastructure work on a new “full fibre” network, which was partly funded by the UK Government.

Ogi and O'Connor Utilities FTTP Engineer

Civil engineering firm O’Connor Utilities (OCU Group Limited), which among other things is helping a number of operators to build full fibre broadband ISP networks across the UK (Netomnia, CityFibre, Ogi etc.), has today announced the acquisition of telecom installation service provider FKS (UK) Limited.

The North Lanarkshire Council in Scotland has announced that up to £150 million could be spent as part of an “initial” 15-year deal with ISP Commsworld, which will work to create lots of free public WiFi networks and to upgrade local public sector sites to gigabit broadband connectivity. Local homes and businesses may also benefit.

Some 170,000 homes and businesses across the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey) and Isle of Man could soon see faster broadband speeds after local ISP Sure completed a major network capacity upgrade, which was delivered by technology and civil engineering provider Telent.

The MP for Chesham and Amersham, Sarah Green, has challenged the UK Government to make progress on commitments made to local authorities along the Phase One rail route for High Speed 2 (HS2), which among other things included the promise to construct a new “broadband superhighway” to help expand faster internet access.

Openreach (BT) has warned of further provisioning delays for UK customers taking their high-capacity data services, specifically their Ethernet Backhaul Direct (EBD) products, which is occurring after the ongoing global shortage of semiconductor chips (here) hit their supply of kit from Ciena.

Since April 2017 the UK Government has allowed broadband networks to claim 100% business rates relief on new fibre infrastructure, but this “Fibre Tax” holiday is about to expire and there’s been no indication of an extension. Some operators fear this will add “significant cost and uncertainty to the investment case for full fibre.”

Hull-based UK ISP MS3, which is backed by infrastructure fund Asterion, has selected Nokia to supply the full fibre XGS-PON technology for their rollout of a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the North of England, which aims to cover 500,000 premises. The first build has also begun.

At the end of last year Equinix suddenly informed clients of their MA2 IBX data centre in Manchester that they intended to close the facility. Such moves typically create an unwanted extra expense for UK broadband ISPs and full fibre (FTTP) builders, among others. Not that consumers would notice.

A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).
