The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which alongside Virgin Media Business helps to supply broadband connectivity to around 3,000 schools (over 1.2 million children) in the UK’s capital, has signed an expanded deal with the cable operator that will deliver connection speeds of up to 1000Mbps and often “at no additional cost.”

Ofcom has today proposed changes under their latest UK Physical Infrastructure (PIR) and Business Connectivity Market Reviews (BCMR), which imposes tougher service quality standards upon Openreach’s (BT) network, introduces a regulated Dark Fibre solution and gives ISPs “unrestricted access” to their cable ducts and poles.

Shropshire-based ISP Aquiss has once again reduced the price of their symmetrical 1Gbps Fully Managed Business Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) “full fibre” broadband product to £330 +vat per month, which is now available across parts of 22 UK towns and cities.

More than 1,100 businesses in the Wiltshire UK town of Swindon can now gain access to a new Gigabit speed capable “full fibre” service after Cityfibre announced that their network was “open for business.” Ultrafast broadband will eventually also be extended to local homes via ISP partner Vodafone, but not for awhile.

Further details have today been revealed about a new UK Government funded project that will see ten councils (outside of Belfast) in Northern Ireland coming together in order to benefit from a new Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP / Dark Fibre) network, which aims to connect around 880 public sector sites by March 2021.

The Zayo Group, which operates a large metro and long haul fibre optic network in the UK, has signed a merger agreement to be acquired by Digital Colony Partners and the EQT Infrastructure IV fund in a deal that is valued (cash transaction) at $14.3 billion (£11bn). As a result they will go from being a public to a private company.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which last year secured public funding of £23.8m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) challenge fund, has now issued a related £32m tender to help build a new 450km long Gigabit speed “full fibre” network to serve 1,300 public sector sites.

The Government’s Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock MP, has today announced his intention to upgrade the National Health Service (NHS) with better digital connectivity, not least by ensuring that all GPs and Hospitals are connected to Gigabit capable “full fibre” connections (FTTP or leased lines).

Fibre optic comms provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms has been chosen by Jisc to launch the Janet South network. The rollout will see 7 more BT exchanges unbundled and will utilise 4 existing Points of Presence (PoPs) to provide improved connectivity to 11 UK universities and 80 local colleges.

The UK High Court of Justice has today dismissed Cityfibre’s Judicial Review of the Advertising Standards Authority’s decision to allow slower “part fibre” (hybrid fibre) ISPs to use “fibre” terminology in their broadband adverts, which Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTH/P) providers have long felt to be “misleading“.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has revealed how they hope to unbundle a total of 700 exchanges from BT by 2021, which should enable their own network to cater for more than 80% of the UK with a total core capacity of 5Tbps (Terabits per second); before potentially rising to 987 exchanges by around 2025 (25Tbps core network).

Urban fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today signed a new multi-million pound order with HellermannTyton, which will supply them with key digital infrastructure to support their £2.5bn roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to 5 million UK premises by 2024.

Infracapital, which is the infrastructure equity investment arm of M&G Prudential, has this week completed its £380m acquisition of a 50% stake in UK fibre optic comms provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms. The initial £215m will be paid upon the completion and a further £165m via several instalments (subject to future performance).

The Plymouth City Council (PCC) has become the latest local authority to secure £3m of funding from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) project, which will result in a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) style ultrafast broadband network being deployed to connect 227 public sector sites (schools, council etc.).
