SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) claims to have found a disparity in the connectivity needs of London-based UK business verses businesses in regional towns. In response they’ve today launched five new optical-enabled data centres in Northampton, Milton Keynes, Hemel, Stickley Park and Newport, Wales to help.

The UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme has approved a £12m bid from the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), which will support the rollout of a new Gigabit capable fibre optic network to public sector sites across rural parts of Newcastle, North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) and Northumberland.

Portsmouth-based business ISP Elite has today announced the expansion of their Dark Fibre network and related Ethernet (leased line etc.) services into the Birmingham and Manchester areas, which means they’re now available to local exchanges in over 136,000 UK postcodes.

Ofcom has today opened a new investigation to examine whether BT has complied with its charging obligations, which occurred after the UK operator indicated to the regulator that it may not have correctly billed for Excess Construction Charges (ECCs) when providing new business lines (Ethernet services etc.).

Dorset-based My Fibre Limited, which describes itself as a “mechanical or industrial engineering” company that runs some Dark Fibre networks, has proposed to extend their network and may build an ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP service for a rural community in mid-Wales.

The University of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire County Council have joined forces to launch a new company called Light Blue Fibre, which will essentially open up access to over 100km of ducting and wholesale Dark Fibre for use by UK broadband ISPs that want to deploy Gigabit capable “full fibre” networks in Cambridge.

Hampshire-based UK business ISP Giganet has today launched their own take on Cityfibre’s new Flex Ethernet product, which for £149 +vat per month will give you a guaranteed rate of 200Mbps (symmetric) that can burst to 1Gbps “on-demand” and with “zero additional charges” (provided there’s enough spare capacity).

Entanet has announced that businesses within reach of their parent company’s (Cityfibre) Dark Fibre network, which is present in parts of over 50 cities across the United Kingdom, can now order their Ethernet Flex service for just £199 +vat per month. This offers a guaranteed rate of 200Mbps (symmetric) but can burst to 1Gbps.

Ofcom has today opened an interesting new consultation, which asks for industry feedback on their approach to modelling the costs of building “full fibre” networks across the United Kingdom (i.e. those used to support mobile 5G services, business connectivity or FTTH broadband for homes etc.).

The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (NWEAB) has today set out its plan for investing up to £7m from Wave 3 of the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme, which will see Gigabit capable fibre and “ultrafast broadband” services being used to connect up to 400 further public sector sites.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today signed a new multi-million pound strategic supplier agreement with the global Prysmian Group. The latter will supply the operator with a range of cable and connectivity solutions to support their growing UK rollout of a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

The UK Government has today committed a further £40m from their 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) programme to support another round of projects, which will help to show how the ultrafast mobile broadband tech could support work in the “logistics and manufacturing sectors.” They also want to simplify the planning process to help rollouts.

The East Suffolk Council in England has agreed to explore a proposed extension of Cityfibre and UK ISP MLL Telecom’s on-going rollout of a new “full fibre” network across the town of Lowestoft, which would enable the network to bring “ultrafast broadband” speeds of 1000Mbps+ to local homes and smaller businesses.

Openreach (BT) has discounted the pricing for their multi-Gigabit virtual (grey) dark fibre style solution (OSA Filter Connect / FSP3000) on 5 year contract terms and introduced a longer 7 year term in order to “better meet the needs of infrastructure providers,” which tend to plan their networks over a longer period of time.

Scotland-based business ISP Commsworld, which this year aims to light up over 2,000 km+ of fibre optic cable in a figure of eight around the UK (one of the largest privately funded long distance Optical Core Networks in the country), has moved down south and opened a new office in London ahead of its expansion.
