Residents in the rural Somerset (England) communities of Sandford and Churchill will soon access ultrafast broadband speeds after UK ISP Truespeed Communications completed the build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which was needed in order to connect the local Thatchers Cider business.

UK ISP MLL Telecom has won the contract to upgrade internet connectivity infrastructure for South Ayrshire Council in Scotland with a new Wide Area Network (WAN). The aim is to completely replace the authority’s legacy wireless network infrastructure with a new a fully managed service.

A team of scientists from Japan and the EU have found a way to replace the use of many parallel lasers with a single frequency comb source, which has enabled them to push data at a speed of 661Tbps (Terabits per second) down a single-mode 30 core optical fibre cable.

On 28th August 2018 Openreach (BT) will begin trialling a new 1Gbps variant of their existing Street Access product for UK businesses and wireless ISPs / network operators (previously limited to 100Mbps), which delivers Ethernet data connectivity to street furniture (lampposts, cabinets etc.).

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today launched the Coppersaurus campaign, which aims to draw attention to the UK’s “prehistoric broadband” and support their court case to end “misleading” uses of “fibre” terminology in ISP adverts (i.e. when it’s used to describe slower hybrid copper and fibre connections).

Bradford-based UK ISP Exa Networks has been chosen by Cityfibre to supply businesses and education sites over their new Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network in West Sussex, which is being built with support from the Government’s £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund.

The national telecoms regulator has today followed yesterday’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (here) by setting out the core regulatory changes that they intend to pursue, which will support the government’s new plan and aim to spread Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks to all by 2033.

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve joined Deutsche Glasfaser, Open Fiber, Reykjavikur and SIRO as signatories of a new alliance, which aims to promote a wholesale-only build model and end the misuse of “fibre” terminology in consumer broadband ISP advertising.

A Censuswide survey of 3,422 home broadband ISP users has found support for Cityfibre’s legal challenge of the current UK advertising rules, which they say “misleadingly” allows so-called hybrid fibre ISPs to promote their services as being “fibre optic” despite using slower metallic cables (e.g. copper).

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT Group (Jersey Telecom) has quietly confirmed that after 6 years they’ve finally completed the build of a new 1Gbps capable “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network on the English Channel Island of Jersey. Any old copper lines will soon be gone too.
