New research from Point Topic has revealed that world fixed broadband lines grew by 1.87% (24.59 million) in Q3 2022 to end the quarter on a total of 1.34 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK appears to have slowed in recent quarters.

Information supplied by BT has revealed that customers on their core fixed broadband ISP network (including Consumer, Enterprise and EE) consumed a total of 141PB (PetaBytes) of internet data on Boxing Day 2022, which is up by 17.5% from 120PB on the same day in 2021.

New customers who take one of Shell Energy’s broadband plans, which are based off Openreach’s UK network (ADSL, FTTC and FTTP), may be displeased to note that the ISP has just significantly increased their out-of-contract prices by around 12.5% (i.e. impacting those who choose to remain loyal at the end of their term).

Internet service provider iTalk has finally branched-out beyond its old ADSL and Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based home broadband packages by launching a new range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered services on Openreach’s national network. Some of their new full fibre packages have also been discounted.

Openreach (BT) has revealed that broadband usage across their UK network of ISPs increased by around 2.5% during 2022 to 64,364 PetaBytes (PB) of data, which is up from 62,700 PB being downloaded in 2021, 50,000 PB in 2020 and 22,000 PB in 2019.

A new Freedom-of-Information (FoI) request has revealed that the Scottish Government‘s £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) across rural parts of the country (predominantly via FTTP), is now not expected to reach full completion until March 2028.

Openreach (BT) has published a summary of their network traffic for 2022, which among other things reveals the average monthly UK data consumption of broadband users across their network for the past year. For example, the busiest month in 2022 was actually January, when a total of 5,701PB (PetaBytes) passed over their network.

Broadband provider BT has issued an update on the national UK rollout of their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was “paused” in May 2022 (here) following complaints about service outages during power cuts etc. But the ISP now says this is “likely” to restart during the “spring of 2023“.

Ofcom has published their Connection Nations 2022 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP networks cover 70% of the UK (21 million premises), which is up from 47%  last year, and outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 67-77% of premises (up from 42-57%).

We reported yesterday that Openreach (BT) had announced a range of price cuts for their full fibre broadband lines (here), but as part of the push toward FTTP the operator also hiked prices for copper-line broadband and phone services too (FTTC / SOGEA and G.fast etc.). Such changes will be particularly painful for those with no alternative.

A couple of months ago Vodafone enhanced their existing range of home broadband (FTTC / FTTP) services by launching a new “Pro Broadband II” plan (here), which saw them become the first UK ISP to bundle a Wi-Fi 6E router (Ultra Hub) and mesh system (Super WiFi). The operator has now expanded this to their business plans.

New customers thinking of taking out one of EE’s fibre-based home broadband packages (FTTC and FTTP) may like to know that the ISP has just introduced a series of new Black Friday discounts (e.g. 900Mbps at £42 per month with free setup for 24-months), which will be available to take until 8th December 2022.

New customers of UK ISP BT will, from later this morning, be able to take one of their ADSL, FTTC, G.fast and FTTP based broadband packages or TV bundles at half price for the first 6 months of service on a 24-month minimum term, including free setup. On top of that, their Full Fibre packages will attach a £50 Reward Card (£110 on certain TV bundles).

Vodafone UK has this morning published their latest Q2 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed broadband ISP base grew again to total 1.111 million customers (up sharply by 39k in the quarter vs 22k in Q1 FY23) and their mobile base also surged again to total 17.543 million (up by 321k vs 115k in the previous quarter).

Openreach (BT) appears to have recently introduced an additional broadband availability checker to its website, which is designed to provide visitors with more details about the current and future coverage of their ADSL, FTTC and FTTP services. But it also gives you data on your estimated UK ISP speeds via their network.

Openreach (BT) has today announced the launch of an unusual supermarket style offer for UK ISPs that make use of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and other fibre-based broadband products, which involves selling their 10Gbps Cablelinks on a “Buy Three Get One Free” basis at wholesale.

The latest Q2 FY23 results to September 2022 have today been released by the BT Group, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 8.76 million premises (up by 805k in the quarter vs 763k last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G customers topped 8.157 million (up from 7.74m).
