Some 40 homes on the remote Scottish Isle of Coll, which is home to around 200 people, have been left without broadband until at least Monday because Openreach’s engineers cannot safely reach the island by boat in order to repair their niche Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) network. Some homes have now been offline for 3 weeks.

Homes and businesses on Shetland, which is a remote subarctic archipelago that resides some way north of Scotland, have suffered two breakages to different parts of their main SHEFA-2 (Faroese Telecom) submarine (subsea) fibre optic cable. As a result, a lot of broadband and phone connections on the island are being disrupted.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has today responded to pressure from Ofcom by announcing the launch of their own social broadband tariff for those on benefits (Universal Credit etc.) – called ‘Essentials Broadband‘, which is one of the cheapest social tariffs on the market at £12 per month.

Neos Networks, which operates a 34,000km long fibre network with 676 Points of Presence across the UK, has today launched a Managed variant of its Dedicated Internet Access (Managed DIA) service. A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has found that 25% of respondents “regularly fail” to receive the broadband internet speeds they pay for and 7% claim to never get the promised performance. But 42% also admit to not knowing what speed their package is supposed to deliver.

Ofcom’s autumn 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 37% of the UK, while 20.2 million homes (68%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network and 48-64% of premises can now get outdoor 5G coverage by at least one operator.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today enhanced their existing range of home fixed line (FTTC / FTTP) services by launching a new “Pro Broadband II” package, which claims to be “providing UK’s fastest WiFi signal throughout the home” by being the first provider to bundle a Wi-Fi 6E capable “UltraHub” router.

A new Censuswide survey of 2,001 UK adults (aged 16+) that have broadband, which was commissioned by ISP Zen Internet and conducted during May 2022, has found that 32% of respondents still aren’t confident they can define what “full fibre” is – that’s up from 28% when the same question was asked in 2021.

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE has signed a deal with popular online real estate website Zoopla, which will enable them to add more details of home broadband availability to all of their property listings across the United Kingdom. Some of Zoopla’s rivals (e.g. RightMove) already have similar features.

Broadband ISP and energy provider Shell Energy will later this morning launch a new promo, which is to offer “free broadband” until January 2023 to both new and existing customers who take one of their Fast, Superfast Fibre, Superfast Fibre Plus, Ultrafast Fibre or Ultrafast Fibre Plus plans (i.e. ADSL, FTTC or G.fast).

Hull-based network builder and broadband ISP KCOM has today announced a second major expansion of their existing gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which will see them invest a further £100m to cover an additional 50,000 premises across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (14 new locations).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE has today launched somewhat of a unique (or niche) new broadband and phone tariff to “help manage the cost of household bills“, which charges from just £5.99 per week for a download speed of up to 40Mbps on a “52-week contract” (12-month minimum term). There’s also a 0.5Mbps package coming.

The European Commission recently published their annual 2022 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which charts how the EU’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries. The UK was removed from this report post-Brexit, but it’s still possible to see how we compare by using Ofcom’s data.
