Openreach (BT) are making some tweaks to the “stop sell” rules in UK exchange areas that pass the 75% coverage milestone for their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which is the point at which the migration from older copper to fibre services can be triggered. The change adds some flexibility for FTTC lines.

The Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) has today published a new report into two recent state aid supported broadband rollout projects in Northern Ireland, which questions whether they delivered value for money, highlights a lack of contract bidding competition for BT and warns about a reliance on the contractor to self-certify its costs.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today published the latest volume (3) of their “Internet Insights” report, which offers quarterly analysis of their network traffic and usage trends. For example, it notes that UK internet usage was up over 44% pre-pandemic to April 2021, but it has fallen away a bit since then.

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and TV streaming service, NOW (NOW Broadband), has today discounted the price of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “Super Fibre” (63Mbps) package, which comes with inclusive anytime UK phone calls, to just £22 per month for the length of its 12-month minimum contract term.

UK ISP BT Business has today announced the forthcoming 1st July 2021 launch of a new unit that will be tasked with catering for the SoHo market (i.e. micro home-based and single site businesses), which comes attached to an array of new “business-grade” broadband plans (FTTC, FTTP), “unbreakable Wi-Fi” and other services.

UK ISP BT Consumer has today announced that they’re re-introducing 12-month contract terms as an option for new customers, although naturally you can expect to pay a few £ pounds more for these every month than their current headline deals, which sit on much longer 24-month terms.

UK ISP BT has today refreshed some of the discounts on their FTTC, G.fast and “full fibre” FTTP based home broadband and phone packages, which aside from reducing the monthly fee has also removed the setup fee on many of their bundles for new customers.

The latest first quarter 2021 results (financial Q4 FY21) from ISP and mobile giant Vodafone UK have today been published, which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +35,000 customers (vs +38k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 911,000. But their mobile base fell to 17,253,000.

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2021 update for UK broadband and mobile networks has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 21% (up from 18% in Sep 2020) and 37% or 10.8 million homes are within reach of a gigabit-capable (1000Mbps) network (up from 27%). But sadly 4G coverage has not improved and there’s no mention of 5G.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer ISP division, Marc Allera, has today called on the UK Government to help support the industry by making it easier for home broadband providers to launch new social tariffs via targetted funding or subsidies, which could come in a number of different forms.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today confirmed that they’re relaunching their one year (12 months) free Superfast Broadband Packages offer for small businesses, which applies to those who take out one of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and 36-month term based services.

Openreach (BT) has today taken the next step towards upgrading from analogue to digital services via the issuing of a “stop sell” notification in the trial area of Mildenhall (Suffolk), which means that new customers will now only be able to take all-IP (digital / VoIP) based phone and broadband services (no more analogue phones etc.).

BT has today announced their intention to launch a new social tariff called “Home Essentials” for UK people on Universal Credit (and other means-tested benefits), which will give eligible customers a 36Mbps “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) service and 700 minutes of included phone calls for just £15 per month.

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.6% (18.59 million) in Q4 2020, which is down slightly from 2.07% in the previous quarter but still pushes the overall total to 1.18 billion. Meanwhile, the UK reported the strongest quarterly “full fibre” (FTTP) growth of any country on 28.6%.
