Neos Networks (formerly SSE Enterprise Telecoms), which operates a 20,000km long fibre network across the UK and over 350 Points of Presense (PoPs), has today launched its new Ethernet over FTTx (EoFTTx) service for businesses and operators that need more affordable sub-1Gbps connections for their sites.

Residents of the Parklands Development in Reading (Berkshire), which was built a few years ago by CALA and had a battle just to get FTTC from Openreach (BT) installed, are celebrating after managing to convince Hyperoptic to deploy their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband network to all 300+ homes on the site.

As expected (or feared) Openreach (BT) has today announced a series of wholesale price increases for UK ISPs that use certain legacy copper line broadband, FTTC (VDSL2, G.fast, SOGEA) and phone products, which are intended to help the operator to afford their £12bn roll-out of 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today decided to reintroduce their offer of 6 months free business fixed line “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and phone in order to give an extra boost to small businesses as COVID-19 lockdown restrictions are gradually relaxed. The promotion ends on 30th April 2021.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today launched a new UK ISP sibling that is being aimed specifically at small businesses – called ‘Sky Connect‘, although at launch they’ll only be offering packages based off “superfast broadband” Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology from Openreach. But FTTP will follow “later this year“.

UK ISP iDNET has today announced that they’ve reduced some of the prices across their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and SOGEA (data-only FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband packages, which appears to be occurring at the same time as a subtle company rebrand and a major overhaul of their website.

The Scottish Government (SG) has today named 15 islands under the contract for LOT 1 (North Scotland and the Highlands) of their £579m Reaching 100% (R100) project, supported by BT (Openreach), that will gain access to faster broadband ISP speeds via new subsea fibre optic links.

The Government’s £2.52bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,327,128 extra premises since 2012 (up by 33.9K in H2 2020 vs 62.7K in H1 2020) – about 440,000 (our estimate) of these are FTTP – and take-up data to December 2020 shows strong demand.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK have today launched a new range of fixed line “Pro Broadband” packages for homes, which give you better support, “Super Wi-Fi” (i.e. a mesh based WiFi solution to boost coverage) and a hybrid router solution that seamlessly switches between fixed line and 4G (mobile broadband) to keep you online.

Low cost UK broadband ISP TalkTalk, which last year appeared to be taking a step back from their existing YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV products (here), appears to have quietly launched a new promotion that bundles their “fibre broadband” plans with a Freesat 500GB Recordable 4K TV Box (satellite dish and cabling not included).

TalkTalk has today shared a preview from the latest volume (2) of their new ‘Internet Insights‘ report with us, which is a quarterly analysis of the ISP’s network traffic and usage trends. For example, it notes that UK internet usage rose nationally by 40% during 2020, driven by streaming, online gaming and working from home.

The Broadband Forum has published a new technical report (TR-419), which proposes a different way for “full fibre” (FTTP) builders to cut their deployment costs via a Fibre-to-the-extension-point (FTTep) approach. In short, it’s another way of cutting out the need to replace the last few metres of copper with fibre.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband may be pleased to learn that the provider is now deploying a new firmware (software) update for their latest SR203 and SR204 Sky Hub wireless routers, which the provider says should finally fix two of last year’s biggest bugs with VoIP timing and DHCP networking.

Customers of UK ISP BT, specifically those who take out their new VoIP style Digital Voice product (typically offered as a phone solution alongside broadband packages), will soon be able to access the operator’s new ‘Advanced Digital Home Phone‘ handset that comes with Alexa Built-in (Amazon’s smart voice assistant).

The BT Group’s latest Q3 2020/21 results reveal that Openreach’s G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) network now covers a total of 6.88 million UK premises, with 4.05m coming from FTTP alone (up from 3.5m last quarter). The take-up rate for their full fibre services has also improved.

UK ISP and mobile giant Vodafone have today published their latest results to the end of 2020 (financial Q3 FY21), which saw their fixed broadband base grow to 876,000 customers (up by +38k in the quarter vs +45K in Q2 FY21), while their mobile base slowed its decline to total 17,337,000 (down by -43k vs -200k in Q2 FY21).

UK ISP BT and EE has today combined to launch their new converged Halo 3+ package (add-on), which is a hybrid solution that is intended to give customers the “best” all-in-one broadband (e.g. full fibre FTTP as standard), WiFi coverage (“the UK’s only unbreakable Wi-Fi connection“) and mobile (mobile Broadband) connectivity.
