Before it was only a mathematical model (here) but now, after three years, the idea of pushing broadband ISP speeds of up to 1 Terabit per second (1000000Mbps) along a traditional copper line by using previously unexploited “waveguide modes” is finally being turned into a practical lab test at Brown University (USA).

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK informs us that customers taking one of their FTTC based “superfast home broadband” packages, specifically those who will need a brand new copper line installed, won’t have to pay the usual £60 one-off installation charge if they order before the end of April 2020.

Vodafone UK will today join some of the other major ISPs (e.g. BT) by increasing the minimum contract term of their “superfast” FTTC broadband and phone packages from 18 to 24 months. At the same time they’ll also discount the Superfast 1 (35Mbps) package to be priced the same as Superfast 2 (63Mbps) from £20.95 a month.

The UK Government’s new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband – supplied by ISPs BT and KCOM – will tomorrow go live. Some early feedback from Openreach’s (BT) latest trial of ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology on Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband ISP lines, specifically those using the operator’s UK estate of ECI street cabinets, has shown improvements in service speed and latency times (ping).

The deputy leader of Dorset Council, Peter Wharf, this week told a cabinet meeting that he was “now going to be not so nice” to Openreach (BT), which occurred after one of their managers allegedly told the local authority that their current roll-out of “superfast broadband” (FTTC/P) was a “shambles.“

4th March, 2020 (25 Comments)

After several years Openreach (BT) has finally announced that their G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) “ultrafast broadband” ISP technology, which is capable of offering download speeds up to 330Mbps (50Mbps upload), is to finally get a full commercial launch on 1st April 2020. But its coverage seems unlikely to improve much.

The latest independent modelling of “gigabit” (1000Mbps+ / 1Gbps+) capable broadband technologies and coverage has revealed that related ISP networks are now available to 14.32% of UK homes and businesses (4.3 million premises), which compares with 12.40% for “full fibre” (FTTP) networks (3.7m).

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) has today discounted the price of their “Superfast Fibre” (FTTC at average download speeds of 59Mbps) package by -£2 to make it £25 per month for the first 18 months of service (£32 thereafter). Customers of Vodafone UK’s fixed line home broadband service (both FTTC and FTTH powered sides) may like to know that the ISP has recently updated their related Privacy Policy, which reveals just how much data they’re collecting from your home network and router. Some will be surprised, others will be “meh..“

Openreach (BT) has announced plans to trial ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology on “more” of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband network, but what the public briefing doesn’t tell you is that this time they’re going to try rolling it out on their estate of ECI street cabinets.
