ISP Vodafone UK Offers 6 Months Free Business Broadband

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has launched a new promotion to help small businesses get through the COVID-19 crisis, which essentially offers them free broadband with unlimited usage and free access to Microsoft 365 Business Standard’s full suite of flexible business tools for a whole 6 months.

Progress Update for Wales Full Fibre Broadband Rollout with BT

The Welsh Government (WG) has issued their first quarterly progress update on the £22.5m Phase 2 contract they have with Openreach (BT), which aims to extend gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband to a further 26,000 premises by March 2021 (here and here). So far 8,283 rural premises have been completed.

Most EU Countries and UK Set to Miss Targets for Fibre Access

New research from Analysys Mason, which was commissioned by Chinese technology firm Huawei (vested interest), has today warned that the United Kingdom and most EU countries will miss the European Commission’s (EC) future broadband targets unless they tackle the remaining challenges and barriers being faced by operators.

Ofcom has today set out the final funding regulations for their legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which went live in March (summary) – supplied by BT and KCOM – and aims to ensure that people in disadvantaged areas can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

The Government’s £1.8bn Building Digital UK scheme has now helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks to 5,230,474 extra premises since 2012 (up by 32,038 over the past 6 months) – about 370,000 of these are FTTP – and the latest take-up data to Dec 2019 shows rising demand, averaging 62% (Phase 1).

Ofcom – Full Fibre Broadband Grows to 3.5Million UK Premises

Ofcom has published their Spring 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has risen to 12% (up from 10% in September 2019) and the number of premises unable to get 10Mbps+ remains at 2% (608,000 premises). Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (up from 66%).

Frustration in Shropshire Over Stalled Openreach Fibre Rollout

Frustration has erupted in Shropshire (England) after it emerged that 1,800 premises covered by several street cabinets in Shrewsbury and Ludlow would not gain access to “superfast broadband” (FTTC/P) ISP technology from Openreach (BT). The cabinets had been due to benefit from the operator’s commercial UK roll-out.

Vodafone UK Home Broadband Growth Surges to 751000 Users UPDATE

Mobile giant and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has published their latest results to the end of March 2020 (financial Q4 19/20), which saw them reach a total of 751,000 fixed broadband customers (up by +64K in the quarter vs +20K previous quarter). Meanwhile Mobile customers hit 18,042,000 (down by -14K vs +250K previous quarter)

The BT Group has today published their Q4 2019/20 (financial) results and announced a tentative “target” to boost the national roll-out of their “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which could see Openreach reach 20 million UK premises by the “mid – to late-2020s.”

ISP iDNET Cuts UK Fixed Line Phone and Fibre Broadband Prices

UK ISP iDNET, which over the years has built up quite a good reputation for service and support quality, has announced that they’re reducing the price on some of their FTTC and FTTP broadband packages. On top of that they’ve also slashed the cost of standard copper phone line rental by -£2 (excluding VAT) per month.

ISP Shell Energy Discounts UK Broadband Prices Until June

Energy provider and ISP Shell Energy has today discounted their home broadband and phone packages for new subscribers, which for example drops their 63Mbps “Superfast Fibre Plus” package from £34.99 per month on an 18 month term to just £29.99. Customers will be able to take this deal until 1st June 2020.

Openreach Moves to Help UK SMEs During COVID-19 Crisis
