Openreach (BT) has today announced that they will conduct a “large scale” UK trial of Seamless Rate Adaption (SRA) technology on Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based superfast broadband ISP lines (40-80Mbps), which could improve service stability by varying the speed more effectively.

A new study from the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), which did a systematic analysis of all of the 157 broadband measures that have been notified to the European Commission by Member States (inc. UK) between 2003 and August 2018, has warned that the current level of public funding is “insufficient“.

Low cost UK ISPs Plusnet and John Lewis have today both introduced new Black Friday discounts on their broadband (ADSL2+ / FTTC) and phone packages, which include reductions in monthly rentals and various different reward cards. Rather than do two articles we’ve decided to merge them.

The official BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker (only applicable to ISPs and services on Openreach’s UK network) has received another small but interesting update, which adds a couple of new rows and columns in order to display “observed speeds” for your line.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has reintroduced their 36Mbps (average speed) “Sky Fibre Unlimited” FTTC broadband and phone package, which was removed from public display at the start of October (here) and that left only their 11Mbps and 63Mbps packages. They’ve also introduced some new discounts.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today launched a new range of 2018 Black Friday discounts, which among other things sees their 36Mbps (average speed) FTTC based “Faster Fibre” broadband and phone package drop to just £19.95 a month for the first 18 months of service.

An attempt by the Maldon District Council’s Finance Committee to block £45,000 of funding for the local roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+), which is being conducted alongside Essex County Council UK, has been stopped after members of the district council voted against the committee’s decision.

It’s that time of the year again, when UK ISPs get in on the Black Friday action by offering all sorts of discounts to new customers. Kicking off the event a bit early today is BT, which has cut their unlimited 50Mbps (average) “Superfast Fibre” (FTTC/P) and phone package to just £29.99 per month, but there’s more.

The UK telecoms regulator has today issued an update on Openreach’s legal separation from BT. Overall they were “broadly satisfied with progress,” although Ofcom still wants to see more progress being made on improving “full fibre” (FTTP) and general broadband ISP connectivity.

The FTTH Council Europe has today welcomed a vote by the European Parliament to approve the new European Electronic Communications Code (EECC), which could boost investment in “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband and 5G mobile. But they also called on the EU to get tough on “fake fibre” marketing by ISPs.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has reported that they added +44,000 new fixed line home broadband customers during the last quarter (Q2 FY19) to total 479,000, which is down from the +52,000 added in the previous quarter to June 2018. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,055,000 (quarterly fall of -377,000).

Shropshire-based ISP Aquiss has launched a new discount on their unlimited Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based superfast broadband packages when taken without phone line rental, which offers the first 6 months of service on a 12 month minimum contract term at half price to new customers.

Last month the Welsh Government awarded a new £13m contract to BT (Openreach) in order to further extend their FTTP and FTTC based broadband ISP network across rural Wales (here), but this left a question mark over how unfinished builds from Phase 1 would be dealt with under the new Phase 2 deal.

ISP Vodafone UK has today reduced the monthly price of their “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental packages slightly by £1, which means that new subscribers can take their 35Mbps (average speed) service from £20 per month or £26 for 63Mbps (non-existing mobile customers pay slightly more).

BT Group has released their latest results to the end of September 2018 (Q2 – 18/19 financial), which reveals that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) G.fast network has reached 1290000 UK premises and FTTP covers 682,000 (13,000+ to “full fibre” per week). Plus there’s £712m to boost “fibre” cover.

Low cost UK ISP Plusnet appears to have extended their £50 cashback cheques to both of their FTTC based unlimited superfast broadband and phone line rental packages, which currently start at £23.99 per month for an average speed of 36Mbps and £28.99 for an average of 66Mbps.

The cries of “oh no, not another one!” can already be heard today as the Superfast Berkshire project in England joins others in confirming that their roll-out of fibre-based broadband ISP networks – via both Gigaclear and Openreach (BT) – will face a significant delay in the county (affecting both Phase 2 and 3 contracts).
