Good news. Business broadband ISP and communications provider Northern Telecom, which normally focuses on serving the North of England, has announced the acquisition of Wales-focused wireless provider Dyfed Telecom. The move comes shortly after HMRC filed a winding-up petition against the Kidwelly-based business (here).

The CEO of alternative broadband operator Netomnia, Jeremy Chelot, has provided a small update on what was previously merely a future aspiration to potentially introduce a mobile phone service to their retail ISP YouFibre (inc. Brsk). The plan now is to launch their first mobile plans sometime this year.

Back in May 2024 we reported (here) that internet provider Yayzi Broadband were preparing to make some big changes, not least by launching a Mobile (SIM) service. The good news is that the ISP recently put their new mobile service live, which is harnessing Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network.

A new study from the cross-industry UK Spectrum Policy Forum (UKSPF), which was conducted by Smith Institute and Spectrivity, has recommended that the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, should adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to help manage the nation’s finite wireless radio spectrum more efficiently.

Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL), which represents the four major UK mobile operators (EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK), has today confirmed that 10 more government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have just gone live in Scotland as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has come top in a new network benchmarking study of 4G and 5G (broadband and calls) performance across London, which was conducted by the Berlin-based NET CHECK organisation and saw them score the highest number of ranking points (932.83 out of a possible 1,000 points).

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’ve completed a new trial that showcased their ability to deliver multiple 5G Standalone (SA) network slices simultaneously for different use cases. This included one that delivered a seamless live video stream and another that was required to ensure guaranteed upload speeds for a photography agency at the same site.

Network testing and benchmarking firm MedUX has today previewed a new study, which examined the performance and quality of 5G (mobile broadband) networks from EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK across London. Sadly the results, which also tested 14 other major European cities, put the UK’s capital at the very bottom of the table.

Kidwelly-based wireless broadband provider and supplier Dyfed Telecom Limited, which over the past few years has helped to connect various premises in rural Wales to broadband using a mix of mobile (EE powered 4G/5G), satellite (Starlink) and WiFi based solutions, has suffered a blow after HMRC filed a winding-up petition against the business.

European satellite operator Eutelsat has announced that their OneWeb network, which is a global constellation of broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that is partly still supported by the UK government (11% stake), has just conducted the “world’s first successful trial” of a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN).

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has won a key court case against leasing firm AP Wireless (inc. the affiliated Icon Tower company). Some operators believe the firm could risk damaging their roll-out of 5G based mobile broadband technology, such as by pushing up their costs and threatening the viability of future deployments.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has revealed that they’ve begun “piloting” (no pun intended, we think) a new type of done that is designed to help restore connectivity to mobile masts, such as when their underground data capacity cables are cut or damaged. The drones employ a special optical wireless link.

High Speed 2 Ltd, which is a non-departmental public body that is wholly funded by the UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) and oversees the HS2 rail project, has signed a £99.6m deal (£80.5m in public funding) with Hitachi and Telent to design and deploy telecommunications services across the new rail network, including passenger voice and broadband connectivity.

After conducting more research, the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today formally begun to consult on a proposal that will allow low power indoor WiFi and mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) networks to “share” access to the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz). But full implementation could take years.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave, which is backed by investment firm DigitalBridge and naturally has its own vested interests in this field, have published a new study that claims a focus on improving indoor mobile (4G, 5G etc.) signals and “eliminating mobile dead zones” could help to grow the UK economy by £70bn a year.
