Mobile operator EE has announced that their Video Data Pass add-on, which allows UK customers of their 4G and 5G based mobile broadband network to stream online video without it reducing their monthly data allowance, has now added support for both the BBC’s iPlayer service and YouTube.

Mobile operator Three UK has confirmed that they’ve begun trials of a new 5G based “home broadband” service in Camden and Wandsworth (London). On top of that they’re also upgrading their 4G kit in Croydon (i.e. upgrading sites to new antennas and reallocating 10MHz of 3G spectrum (leaving 5MHz for 3G) to 4G for better performance).

The UK telecoms regulator has controversially proposed that it may reserve 390MHz of spectrum in the 3.8-4.2GHz bands, which could be sold to “thousands” of new entrants in order to help them build 5G based mobile broadband networks for local coverage or industrial use (i.e. each license may cover just 50 square metres).

The UK Government has today committed a further £40m from their 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) programme to support another round of projects, which will help to show how the ultrafast mobile broadband tech could support work in the “logistics and manufacturing sectors.” They also want to simplify the planning process to help rollouts.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has proposed to defragment (no.. not their computer hard disks) the 3.4-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands after next year’s auction, which could enable mobile network operators to get the best performance and save money on their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband networks.

Vodafone has quietly become the first UK provider to confirm that it will be “switching off 3G” services within the “next two to three years,” although we fully expect that EE, O2 and Three UK will eventually do something similar as they convert 3G spectrum to 4G or 5G. But 2G voice will remain as a useful low-power fall back.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that the £2bn commercial rollout of their new ultrafast 5G mobile network will begin in August 2019, reaching 25 towns and cities across the UK by the end of 2019. The provider is also pledging “at least 2x faster” broadband speeds thanks to their initial spectrum advantage.

How about this for an unusual study. A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, claims to have found that 21% of respondents stopped exercising at the Gym in order to try and resolve issues with a poor signal. WiFi isn’t much better either.

Crowdsourced data analysis company Tutela has revealed the results from their latest study of mobile broadband performance (i.e. speeds, latency, jitter and packet loss) across the United Kingdom. Overall EE (BT) remains top of the pack for 4G networks, while Three UK does the best for older 3G services.

Ofcom has confirmed that they’re “planning” to make more spectrum available for “shared use” with existing services in the 8GHz and 26GHz radio spectrum bands, which is primarily intended to focus upon supporting high capacity fixed wireless broadband links and indoor 5G applications. The 1.4GHz band is also being freed.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has announced that their new 5G based UK mobile broadband network will be underpinned by a cloud-driven platform from Juniper Networks. As a result the operator hopes to enable a more flexible, virtualised and unified network infrastructure that can deliver to various different requirements.

A new piece of research from WiredScore and the HomeOwners Alliance has claimed that British homeowners and renters are having to pay out £2.2 billion each year in “unnecessary” mobile data (3G / 4G) fees because they suffer from “poor internet” connectivity at home.

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) has launched a “short” inquiry that aims to examine the remaining problems with gaining access to superfast broadband ISP connectivity, mobile signals and accessing digital-only services in remote rural parts of the United Kingdom.

The latest 2019 State of Mobile Network report from Opensignal has ranked the United Kingdom 27th out of 87 countries in the world for its average Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) download speed (21.7Mbps), as well as 30th for upload speeds (7.4Mbps), 29th for latency times (46ms) and 26th for 4G network availability (84.7%).

22nd May, 2019 (25 Comments)

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today moved to steal some of Vodafone’s thunder by announcing that their own commercial ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network will go live (non-trial) from 30th May 2019 in parts of London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester. New rollout locations for 2020 have also been confirmed.

20th May, 2019 (18 Comments)

The next generation of multi-Gigabit speed capable 5G based mobile broadband networks could be facing yet another challenge due to a backlog of disputes over access to UK street furniture (lampposts etc.). Related deployments in some parts of the country are allegedly being delayed by as much as 2 years.

15th May, 2019 (2 Comments)

Crowd-sourced network analyst firm OpenSignal has conducted a short, albeit very interesting, analysis of how the different amounts and frequencies of radio spectrum owned by 4G mobile operators (Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE) can impact mobile broadband speeds across the United Kingdom.
