The CEO of Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica, Marc Murtra, has told Reuters that the outcome of their Strategic Review will see the group buying up telecom assets in Europe, which could potentially include gobbling Liberty Global’s stakes in UK broadband and mobile giants nexfibre, Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2).

Network operator nexfibre and supporting retail broadband ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), which share some of the same parentage, have today announced that they’ve expanded the reach of their symmetric 2Gbps speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to more than 13,000 homes in the Gloucestershire market town of Stroud for the first time.

Virgin Media (O2) has revealed that their joint expansion of 2Gbps speed FTTP broadband (nexfibre and FTTP upgrades) have now reached 94,867 new homes in Belfast (Northern Ireland), 68,631 in Birmingham, 56,652 in Leeds, 65,121 in Coventry and 63,870 in Stoke-on-Trent. But interestingly, the provider still suggests nexfibre will reach their target of covering 5 million homes across the UK by 2026.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), has published their latest quarterly (Q2 2025) build update and confirmed that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network now covers 2.3 million UK premises. But its future remains uncertain.

The latest Q2 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 today have revealed that their gigabit broadband network increased by 114,900 premises in the quarter to cover 18.53 million UK homes. But related customers suffered another fall to total 5,643,500 (down by -51.4k in Q2 vs -44k in Q1) and O2’s mobile base also suffered a fall (albeit with positive results in wholesale).

Mobile network provider giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica and uses O2’s associated virtual operator (MVNO) platform, has recently started connecting the first customers to their new trial of a 500Mbps home broadband product – using nexfibre and Virgin Media’s 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP / XGS-PON) networks.

Mobile network operator giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica and naturally uses O2’s virtual operator (MVNO) platform (they’re also trialling FTTP broadband via nexfibre and Virgin Media – here), has announced that its CEO – Ash Schofield – has decided to step down, and they’ve begun the hunt for his replacement.

Network operator nexfibre, which is working alongside Virgin Media to deploy a new 10Gbps full fibre broadband (FTTP) network across millions of UK premises (c.2.2m have already been built), has told ISPreview that they “remain focused on enabling as many ISPs as possible“. This came after some of ISPreview’s sources indicated that their wholesale plans seem to have stalled.

The boss of Liberty Global (Mike Fries), one of the parents behind UK broadband provider Virgin Media (O2) and associated network builder nexfibre, has reportedly claimed that the UK Government’s Business Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds MP, expressed that he was “anxious” for them to step in and rescue struggling alternative networks.

A new report claims that debt-laden Telefonica SA is allegedly drawing up plans that would enable them to take control of the 50/50 UK Joint Venture (JV) that it owns with Liberty Global, which reflects broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2). In addition, they also have another JV with InfraVia Capital Partners to build a new fibre network in the UK (nexfibre).

Nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), recently published their latest quarterly (Q1 2025) build update and confirmed that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network now covers 2.2 million UK premises. But a big chunk of their future build plan for 2025-26 has now vanished.

Liberty Global has confirmed that sibling nexfibre, which is working alongside UK ISP partner Virgin Media to deploy a new 10Gbps full fibre broadband (FTTP) network across over 5 million premises (c.2.2m have already been built), has scaled back its coverage target for 2025 to 2.5 million premises passed. At the same time, VMO2 “have paused our NetCo plans“.

The latest Q1 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have today been released, which saw their gigabit broadband network grow by 165,000 premises in the quarter to cover 18.4 million UK homes and related customers suffer a sharp fall to total 5,694,900 (down by -44k in Q1 vs +12k in Q4 2025) “due to heavy discounting in the market“. The operator’s outdoor 5G mobile cover also increased to 77%.

Last month we reported that broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) were gearing up to start making their new XGS-PON powered full fibre (FTTP) network upgrade available to homes in existing coax (cable) areas (here), which was expected to occur in March 2025. Since then we’ve observed a growing number of areas where the service and symmetric speeds of 2Gbps are now becoming available, albeit with a catch.
