The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today set out their final plans for opening up Openreach’s (BT) national network of telegraph poles and underground cable ducts so that they can be used by rival ISPs in order to deploy ultrafast “full fibre” broadband (FTTH/P) services.

Ofcom’s annual study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds across the United Kingdom has revealed that the average Internet download rate is now 36.2Mbps (up from 28.9Mbps last year), with uploads hitting 4.3Mbps (up from 3.7Mbps). But there’s a widening gap between rural and urban areas.

Ofcom has today published a huge new report into the service quality and provision times of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs and technologies, which finds that 87% of broadband customers are satisfied with their service and this rises to 89% for landline (phone) and 92% for Mobile.

UK Internet provider TalkTalk Business has today confirmed that they will be one of the first ISPs to adopt Openreach’s (BT) proposed ‘Dark Fibre Access‘ product, which follows a key ruling by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that will affect how the service is priced.

The MP for Warrington North (Cheshire, England), Helen Jones, has claimed that many residents in the area should be paid a total of £246,000 in compensation by ISPs because of the slow broadband speeds that local homes are alleged to endure. She wants Ofcom to take action.

At present it’s unlawful (unless approved by a Mobile Network Operator) for consumers to use repeaters that boost and retransmit UK mobile signals, which can help indoor coverage but may also cause interference or other adverse effects for nearby customers. Ofcom now proposes to change this.

The price that ISPs and consumers pay for access to a 40Mbps FTTC superfast broadband line on Openreach’s (BT) network in the United Kingdom is set to fall after the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, launched a new review of the wholesale local access market. Quality of service standards will also be improved.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2016 (Oct-Dec) consumer complaints study has found that BT attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband services, while Plusnet did the same for fixed line phone, Vodafone had a similar problem for Mobile and once again BT also came bottom for Pay TV.

BT has set aside £300m to repay ISPs, such as TalkTalk and Vodafone, after an investigation by Ofcom found that their network arm (Openreach) had cut compensation payments to other telecoms providers for late installs of high-speed business lines (Ethernet). BT must thus pay a £42m fine.

Internet provider Plusnet has today been hit by a fine of £880,000 after the national UK telecoms regulator ruled that they had incorrectly billed 1,025 ex-customers for landline and broadband services, which occurred between 26th May 2011 and 3rd September 2015.
