Budget UK ISP Plusnet has recently announced another round of annual price rises on their broadband and phone services, which are set to be introduced just before Christmas on 3rd December 2019. On that same day the provider will also withdraw their old “broadband without line rental” packages from sale for new customers.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has concluded their review of broadband ISP pricing and agreed industry changes that are designed to protect “vulnerable” consumers (e.g. pensioners) from “loyalty penalties,” which references how loyal customers (those who don’t switch or renegotiate) often end up paying more.

The fallout from last year’s troubled migration to a new billing platform has continued after broadband ISP Plusnet confirmed that, in yet another blunder, their system failed to take payments from hundreds of customers for a period of several months. As a result some subscribers are about to be hit with a large backdated bill.

A new report from Ofcom has revealed that Plusnet attracted the most UK consumer complaints for fixed line broadband and phone in Q1 2019, while Vodafone attracted the most gripes for Mobile and TalkTalk for Pay TV services. On the flip side Sky Broadband (Sky TV) and EE generated the fewest fixed line moans.

A new survey of 3,807 consumers by Which? has revealed the top consumer complaints for each of the UK markets largest TV and broadband ISPs. Overall the study found that 70% had experienced an “issue” with their provider and customers of cable operator Virgin Media were the most likely to have had problems.

Which? has conducted a new “loyalty penalty” study of entry-level “fibre broadband” and phone bundles across 12 of the biggest broadband ISPs in the UK market. This reveals that customers of Virgin Media, TalkTalk and the Post Office are hit by the biggest price hikes (up to 60%) after their initial contract ends.

Broadband provider Plusnet has blamed a “system error” after a switch of payment providers resulted in the ISP failing to collect the January 2019 payments from a small number of their mobile customers. The issue was corrected but some of those hit discovered that their credit files had been given a negative mark.

Low cost UK ISP Plusnet has discounted the price of their entry-level ADSL2+ (10Mbps avg.) based unlimited broadband and phone bundle to just £17 per month for the first 12 months of service (including free activation), which seems designed to challenge the price points of rivals TalkTalk, Post Office and Direct Save Telecom.

The national UK telecoms regulator has today published their 2019 study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reports that the average download rate has risen from 46.2Mbps last year to 54.2Mbps now and uploads hit 7.2Mbps (up from 6.2Mbps). But the gap between urban and rural areas has worsened.

Ofcom has today published their 2019 survey of UK service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest broadband ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (79%) and Tesco Mobile did the same for mobile (90%).

Ofcom’s new system of automatic compensation will tomorrow be introduced, which requires major UK ISPs to compensate consumers (cash or bill credits) for a total loss of broadband connectivity (i.e. if the outage lasts longer than 2 working days), missed appointments or delayed installs.

Several months have now passed since budget broadband ISP Plusnet, which is part of the BT Group, migrated their old billing system to a “brand-new” platform and sadly it appears as if some customers are continuing to report a variety of different problems and bugs.
