Sky (Sky Broadband) has slashed the price of its unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service, NOW TV, from £15 to £8.99 per month in the hope of becoming more competitive with rivals like Netflix and LOVEFiLM (note: the 24 hour Sky Sports Day Pass remains £9.99).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today published its latest quarterly results to 30th September 2013, which saw their consumer broadband subscribers grow by +111,000 during Q3 to total 5,017,000. Naturally this is sharply down from the +519,000 added in Q2 when O2 and BE Broadband’s former fixed line customers were merged into the total.

BT has successfully caused one of Sky’s direct mailing adverts to be banned because it promoted the operators On Demand TV service alongside their “free broadband” product, which is capped via a 2GB usage allowance and thus “would significantly limit the amount of Catch Up content that could be downloaded“.

Customers of BT’s broadband TV (IPTV) service will shortly gain access to the popular Sky Movies channels from BSkyB. The telecoms and broadcasting giants have agreed to a new multi-year contract that will begin from 26th October 2013.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a direct mailing (post) advert for Sky (Sky Broadband) because it “misleadingly exaggerated” the effect of Virgin Media’s broadband Traffic Management Policy (TMP) and unfairly “denigrated” their brand.

Customers of Sky Broadband’s dominant fully unbundled (MPF LLU) network should now be benefitting from two subtle ADSL2+ performance improvements after the ISP confirmed that it had recently added G.INP and Nitro technology to help “boost line stability and speeds“. BT are also testing G.INP but for superfast FTTC lines.

Customers who take their phone service from Sky Broadband (BSkyB) will be displeased, if perhaps not surprised (every other major ISP has already announced a rise), to learn that the price of Sky Line Rental will increase from £14.50 a month now to £15.40 from 1st December 2013.

Internet provider PlusNet has been named the overall winner for Broadband Choices annual Customer Satisfaction Awards 2013, which claims to have quizzed over 2,500 subscribers of the main ISPs in the United Kingdom to help reach its conclusion. But there were other winners too.

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for maintaining BT’s national UK network, has said that it’s always “working to improve” its service after at least two ISPs – Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and TalkTalk – both criticised their service quality ahead of Ofcom’s on-going review of the fixed telecoms market.

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today highlighted the latest “independent testing” from the University of Bristol and Farncombe, which appears to show that their new SuperHub wireless broadband router offers better home WiFi performance than BT’s equivalent HomeHub4. It also beat similar kit from Sky Broadband and TalkTalk.

Sky Broadband has moved to reassure people after some of their customers noticed that the third-party SessionCam service appeared to be monitoring private activity upon sensitive parts of the ISPs online account management (My Sky) pages, such as the page for entering payment details.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) have quietly updated their FAQ pages with more information about the forthcoming migration of O2 UK and BE Broadband fixed line ISP customers, which was previously expected to begin during the “autumn“. We now know that this process will start in October 2013 and should end sooner than expected.

Business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has confirmed that they’ve started moving “a lot of” BE/O2 Wholesale broadband lines over to their other back-haul carrier (TalkTalk Wholesale), which has primarily been caused by a loss of customers and related “uncertainty over the Sky take over“.
