Starlink’s LEO Satellite Broadband Network Hits 1 Million Subscribers

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has announced that Starlink’s global mega constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband ISP satellites has managed to grow its customer base to over 1 million, which is double the 500,000 they reported just six months ago in June 2022.

Ofcom – Gigabit Broadband Covers 70% of UK as 5G Hits 67-77%

Ofcom has published their Connection Nations 2022 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP networks cover 70% of the UK (21 million premises), which is up from 47% last year, and outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 67-77% of premises (up from 42-57%).

Openreach Sets 229 PetaBytes (PB) UK Data Traffic Record

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just informed us that more broadband ISP traffic was carried across their UK network yesterday (Sunday 11th December 2022) than ever before – totalling 229PB (PetaBytes), which compares with 222PB on the previous highest day (5th December 2021).

Top 10 UK Cities with the Biggest Gap in Broadband Speeds (Fastest vs Slowest)

A new report has used data from 16,500 consumer speed tests to reveal the ten UK cities with the biggest performance gap between those with the fastest broadband ISP speeds and those with the slowest. Glasgow was the “most unequal city“, with its fastest speeds (840.4Mbps) being 866 times quicker than its slowest (0.97Mbps).

75% of UK to Have Choice of Three Gigabit Broadband Networks by 2030

A new Point Topic forecast of fixed line ISP network coverage, which considers both the impact of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) and Cable (DOCSIS 3.1) networks, has predicted that gigabit-capable networks will cover around 97% of the UK by 2030 and the majority of postcodes (75%) will also have the choice of up to three gigabit networks.

New data from Ookla, which operates the popular broadband ISP and mobile network speed testing service – Speedtest.net, claims to have today revealed the top fastest 5G handsets in the UK for mobile broadband speed. Interestingly, they’re all Apple iPhones.

Utility Warehouse Grows to 341,392 UK Broadband Customers

Energy and communications provider Telecom Plus, which trades as UW (Utility Warehouse), has published their latest biannual (H1 FY23) report and revealed that they ended the period with 341,392 broadband ISP customers (up by 17,769 in the last 6 months) and 364,062 mobile customers (up by 39,289).

Ofcom Tells UK Phone Providers to Identify and Block Spoofed Calls

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today introduced new rules that will require phone providers to crackdown on “fake phone numbers” by identifying and blocking “spoofed calls“, where feasible. The move aims to tackle a problem that, during the summer, resulted in 40.8 million people being targeted by suspicious calls and texts.

Survey Identifies Reasons for Slow Take-up of Broadband Social Tariffs

A new survey of 2,009 UK people eligible for fixed broadband social tariffs by ISPs (i.e. cheaper packages for those on benefits), which was conducted by consumer magazine Which?, has revealed that 39% of those eligible and aware of such tariffs do not intend to signup due to concerns over slow speeds, existing contracts and other issues.
