Low Awareness Hampers Take-up of UK Social Broadband Tariffs

A new Opinium survey for Uswitch, which questioned 2,000 UK adults this month, has estimated that 65% of those deemed to be “financially vulnerable people” aren’t aware that social tariffs for broadband exist from various UK ISPs, with just 15% of eligible households actually applying for them.

ONS Finds 2021 R&D Spending on UK Telecoms Has Grown

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that the telecoms industry has gone from last year’s report, when spending on research and development grew by just 0.95% to total £956m, to this year when such spending has risen by 4.5% (£44m) to reach a 9-year high of £1.028bn.

Numbeo Ranks UK 39th in the World for Cost of Broadband Service

The latest data gathered by Numbeo, which is a crowd-sourced global database that examines the cost of living, has surveyed the cost of fixed broadband ISP provision across 109 countries and found that the United Kingdom ranked as the 39th most expensive country, with an average monthly cost of £30.87.

Ofcom’s Q2 2021 Complaints Study Shames UK ISP TalkTalk

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2021 (calendar) consumer complaints study, which saw TalkTalk come top of the naughty table for gripes about their fixed line home broadband and phone services. Meanwhile, Virgin Media took the most flak for Mobile and Pay TV, although overall complaints were down.

Estate Agents Find Full Fibre May Help to Drive UK House Sales

A new survey of 294 UK estate agents, which was conducted by telecoms equipment manufacturer Omdia on behalf of Huawei, has found that the desire for “high-quality broadband” continues to be a significant factor for home buyers and access to gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP connections seems to be particularly important.

BT Group’s UK FTTP Broadband Cover Hits 5.8 Million Premises

The BT Group has published their Q2 2021/22 results, which reports that their consumer ISP division now has a total of 945,000 broadband customers on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 860K last quarter), while Openreach has grown their UK FTTP coverage to 5.78m premises (up from 5.16m). Build costs have also fallen.

Virgin Media O2 Adds 67,000 More Premises to UK FTTP Cover

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their latest joint (merged) results for Q3 2021, which reveals that their full fibre (FTTP) network rollout reached another 67,000 UK premises in the quarter (down from 89K in Q2) and their total fixed broadband customer based hit 5,536,400 (up by +42.3K in Q3 vs +35.7K in Q2).

Digital Connectivity Index Ranks UK 8th Out of 24 OECD Countries

A new Digital Connectivity Index (DCI) has been published today, which measures how individuals and organisations can connect with one another and the rest of the world through good quality broadband access. Overall the United Kingdom ranks 8th out of the 24 counties of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Origin Broadband UK Left Netgem with GBP422K in Unpaid Invoices

Pay TV solutions provider Netgem this week reported that the decision by Origin Broadband UK to appoint an administrator (here), which came after the ISP struggled to tackle over £20m in losses, resulted in the TV firm taking the decision to “write-off” some £422,000 (500,000 Euros) worth of “unpaid invoices“.

BDUK Publish New Evaluation of UK Superfast Broadband Project

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today posted a new evaluation of the previous Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB), which helped to boost the coverage of “superfast” (24-30Mbps+) ISP networks from c.76% (commercial) to around 97% of premises (i.e. an additional 5.5 million premises) across three phases.

Quarterly Full Fibre Growth in the UK Falls Back in Q2 2021

The latest research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 1.7% (20.66 million) in Q2 2021 to total 1.222 billion, but it also found that the quarterly growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) networks in the UK had fallen sharply to 14.8% in Q2 2021 after previously seeing consecutive increases.

England Councils Report Warns of Gigabit Broadband Divide

Scam Calls and Texts Hit 45 Million UK People Over Summer UPDATE

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has estimated that 44.6 million UK people may have received scam calls and text messages during the past three months (summer period). But worryingly, around 2% of those who received such a message or call (roughly a million people) reported following the scammers’ instructions.
