As the impact of the national COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis and lockdown begins to bite then more and more customers of UK broadband ISPs may start to run into financial difficulties, which can make it harder to pay their bills. Ofcom 2020 Study – Average UK Broadband ISP Speeds Hit 64Mb

Ofcom has published their annual report into fixed line home broadband speeds, which finds that the average download rate has risen from 54.2Mbps last year to 64Mbps now (uploads from 7.2Mbps to 14Mbps). It also examines the performance and latency of big ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and others.

Virgin Media Broadband Covers 150000 Extra N.Ireland Premises

Good news. Cable operator Virgin Media UK has today effectively completed the target they set in 2017 (here) by growing the reach of their “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP and TV network to a further 150,000 premises in Northern Ireland (total of 375,000). As a result half of all premises in the country can now access their service.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK is trying to fix an unusual fault that reduces upload speeds for some users in the Watford (WD18) area to just 0.07Mbps, while download speeds are unaffected. Customers have seen their access slow to a crawl and the struggle to contact the provider’s strained support team hasn’t helped.

The business division of broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has this morning confirmed that they’ve signed a new deal with mobile network operator Three UK, which will see VMB’s fibre optic lines being harnessed to supply capacity (backhaul) to fuel over 3,000 of the mobile firm’s new ultrafast 5G sites.

The parent of mobile operator O2 UK, Telefonica, has this morning confirmed last week’s speculation – via a brief filing to Spain’s market regulator – that they’ve officially opened merger talks with the parent (Liberty Global) of UK cable broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media. But no deal has been agreed and the talks could still fail.

UK ISP Virgin Media has discounted the price of their 100Mbps to 350Mbps standalone ultrafast broadband packages for the first 12 months of service (minimum contract term), which now start from just £28 per month (£42 thereafter). On top of that they’ve also removed the £35 one-off setup fee (expected to last until 29th April 2020).
